About The Teacher

I received my undergraduate degree in English/Secondary Education
from Roosevelt University, graduating with Franklin Honors. I completed an
undergraduate fellowship at the Newberry Library in Chicago studying
Elizabeth I (and Shakespearean studies.) I also taught a college-level
writing course during an internship at Roosevelt.

This year, I will be teaching two sophomore honors, two junior English
courses, and one Intro to Theatre. In addition, I am excited to also co-teach
(with Mrs. Veitch!)the Publications class responsible for the yearbook and
school newsletters. With Mrs. Veitch, I will be directing the Fall Play this
year and with Mrs. Littner, chairing the Kick Off Mentor Program.

I hope you find this web site helpful in course communications! Do not
hesitate to contact me via email should you have any questions or concerns
about the class or your child's progress. I believe that two heads are
always better than one - and your child's success is my primary focus!

On a personal note, I am happily married (17 years) enjoy supporting my own
two children with their sports and interests and can be found working in my
yard every chance I get.
My favorite authors change all the time. Currently, I'm reading George R.R.
Martin's Game of Thrones series, and am so geekily excited that HBO has
produced it as a mini-series. I have Lord of the Rings memorized. And yes, I
love Star Trek (original series..and recent movie reboot) graphic novels and
know way too much Star Wars trivia. For what it's worth, I was an avid D&D
gamer back in the day.

Mission For The Class

ENGLISH 2 Honors: AMERICAN LITERATURE!!! We will be exploring the
traditional canon of American literature, of course, but with a keener eye on
literary theory. My focus at the Honors level will be less about
comprehension and more on interpretation. Writing will be extensive and
always literary based. Vocabulary will focus on etymology, grammar will be
fluid and holistic through application.

ENGLISH 3: The students will spend the length of two quarters researching
and developing their required argumentative research paper. The process of
this assignment is just as important as the final product. We will also
explore the traditional canon of American literature throughout the year. I
will teach from the required text, individual novels and supplemental
materials. I encourage the students to place the literature into a larger
perspective within the classroom and in their writing assignments. Since
the material is exclusive to the American experience, I consider it the
backbone of who we are today in this country.

INTRO TO THEATRE: Since this is a course that has never been taught at
Marian, this year will be a focused exploration of all aspects of theatre.
We will have a set syllabus, but I will be working closely with the students
to develop the specifics of the course throughout the year. The choice of
materials may change over the next few years as we determine which resources
best suit the nature of this course! It's going to be a fantastic experience!

PUBLICATIONS:
The goal is simple: produce the BEST yearbook ever! To do that, we will
learn all about journalism, spread and layout design and photography. There
will be many assignments that will need to take place outside of school, and
students will be expected to step outside of their comfort-zone when they
interview various people (at all levels!) There will be ample time given in
class to work on pages and assignments, but photography and coverage is
completely dependent on the students outside of class.
