Monthly Reading Project

 
APRIL-We are typing or writing our own poetry. This may be worked on at school and at home. Students have a rubric which shows points scored for each type of poetry




-GENRE DEFINITIONS BOOK EXAMPLES-

REALISTIC FICTION-A story using made up characters but could happen in
real life. Ramona the Pest, any Matt Christopher books
HISTORICAL FICTION-a fictional story that takes place in a particular time
period in the past. Often the setting is real but the characters are made
up from the author's imagination.                                                                                 Ben and Me, How Many Days to America-A Thanksgiving Story
FANTASY-a story including elements that are impossible such as
talking animals and magic powers The Chocolate Touch, Leon and the Spitting Image

MYSTERY-a suspenseful story about a puzzling event that is not solved
until the end of the story.                                                                                                     A to Z Mysteries, Nancy Drew, Encyclopedia Brown
ADVENTURE-a suspenseful story with interesting settings.                                    Anything written by Gary Paulsen is a sure bet for adventure.
POETRY-verse written to create a response of thought and feeling from
the reader. It often rhymes.                                                                                         Where the Sidewalk Ends, Kids Pick the Funniest Poems
SCIENCE FICTION-a type of fantasy that uses science and technology
(robots and machines)usually set in the future.                                                          My Teacher is an Alien, The Star Wars series 
BIOGRAPHY-a story of a real person's life written by another person Abe Lincoln, The Boy Who Loved Books; NBA Superstar Shaquille 
O'Neal
