How does the new schedule at Mayo impact the music department?
The new schedule has reduced the number of periods in the day from 9 to 8.
This means that periods have become longer, even though the days themselves
are not longer. This, however, has lead to 7th/8th band and choir being
held during the same hour. Band still meets 5 days/week, but those students
who are also in choir attend that class on Tuesday and Thursday instead of
band. The schedule change has also lead to the elimination of jazz band as
a scheduled class in the school day. 6th grade band is held in a separate
hour.
Can I still be in 7th/8th band and choir?
Yes, you will attend band on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and choir on
Tuesday and Thursday. Students who are in band only have band every day.
I was asked to be in jazz band. When is that?
Jazz Band takes place Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:30-8:20 am. It begins
before school, and you stay through advisory (Jazz Band is your advisory) on
those days.
Can I have a study hall if I am in band or choir?
In short, no. BUT, the benefits you will receive and the fun you will have
being a part of a musical ensemble far outweigh sitting in a quiet room!
Can I play sports and be in band?
Absolutely! In fact, you should sample as many things as you are interested
in, especially while you are in middle school. Mrs. Houser is happy to work
with conflicts that occur with all Mayo Middle School sports and co-
curricular activities. You do not need to sacrifice one or the other!
What kind of grades do I need to have?
To participate in any IESA sponsored contest (i.e. solo and ensemble, or
contest) students must be doing passing work in all classes for that current
grade period to be eligable.
