In our second grade
classroom, students will be participating daily in a writer's workshop.
Through writer’s workshop, the children experience and practice all the stages
involved in the writing process. At the beginning of our writer’s workshop, I
will use a mini-lesson that targets a specific writing skill. The mini-lesson
will usually last ten to fifteen minutes. Following the mini-lesson, the
students will be given independent writing time. During this time, I will be
holding writing conferences to discuss writing with small groups of children
and/or individual students. This independent writing time usually lasts 30-40
minutes. Afterwards, the students will participate in a sharing session.
During share time, several students share a piece of writing in the author’s
chair while all others listen. The students are taught to carefully listen to
each author and give appropriate feedback.
