Seventh Grade |
Classroom ExpectationsWelcome to 7th Grade and the 09-10 School Year!
First and foremost, the idea is to spotlight kids who are doing the right thing! This promotes our school's PBIS program, which rewards positive behaviors in the areas of Responsibility, Respectfulness and Safety with "Panther Paws." The students exchange their Panther Paws for special events & privileges at the 7th grade level as well as school wide.
Academic Subjects:
Math: The 7th grade students will expand their knowledge of mathematics. The students will focus on the Illinois State Goals for Mathematics: Number Sense, Measurement, Algebra, Geometry, and Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability. We will learn the various tools of math and also, how to apply them to real world situations. The students are required to bring their calculators (the TI-30XIIS) to class everyday.
Reading:
The 7th graders will spend the year focusing on mastering and identifying the main literary elements including: setting, plot, character development and motivation, the various forms of conflict, mood, and theme. Student's will learn to identify these elements in various forms of fiction and nonfiction writing. Classes will also focus on mastering inferencing, using context clues to help with meaning and understanding while reading, identifying main idea and supporting details, and making predictions. In conjunction with the curriculum, students will be reading several novels throughout the year including: Hatchet, The Giver, The Outsiders, The Rangers Apprentice, The Secret Life of Bees, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, and Among the Hidden. Each quarter every student will be required to independently read a novel from an assigned genre and write a book report on the novel. Students will also be required to complete at least one extended project each quarter. Social Studies:
The 7th grade curriculum is United States history through the Civil War. The U.S. Constitution test and the Illinois Constitution Test will be given early in the 2nd quarter. Please watch for Constitution Flashcards your child should be using to study with every night. Students will be required to complete a 'Parade Float' research project which will be displayed on History night, January 28, 2010. Springtime will bring another research-based project in which the students will write and provide illustrations in the design of a PowerPoint historical fiction. The 7th grade curriculum is designed by state standards for the Science ISAT test. (There is a month to month layout upon request). Topics include: Scientific Inquiry, Living Things (with the Environment and Interaction, Classification, Change Over Time, Cell Biology, Genetics and Botany), Earth Science (Water,Weather, and Atmosphere), Matter and Energy (Properties of Matter and Light), Force and Motion, and Astronomy ( Sun, Moon, Earth, and Inner and Outer Planets). Technology standards are used within the above mentioned topics. There is a major project each quarter. Some are done in school and some are out of school. The project cost is very minimal. Science night is March 30th from 6:30-7:30 pm.
Language Arts:
The 7th grade Language Arts curriculum is aligned with the Illinois State Standards. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of the English language through speaking and writing for a variety of audiences and purposes. Their knowledge base will be enhanced by focusing on:
-using correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and structure in their writing.
-composing well-organized and coherent compositions for specific purposes and audiences.
-communicating ideas in writing to accomplish a variety of purposes.
Besides demonstrating success in writing persuasive, narrative, and expository essays, the students will also be required to complete a research paper, which will be introduced in the 2nd quarter. Through the use of Writers Workshop, students will have extensive practice to enhance their writing skills.
Assignment Book Policy:
All 7th grade teachers write the day's assignment on the board. It is the student's job to copy the assignment in his/her Assignment Book. Daily assignments are due in class the next day. Due dates for long term assignments, such as projects, are clearly written by the teacher as part of the assignment. (The student should never write "no homework" or "nothing" for any subject.) Assignment Books are checked every Tuesday morning during Homeroom. Students who have not maintained their books as described receive a lunch detention that is monitored by one of the teachers. We strongly encourage parents/guardians to check the student's Assignment Book nightly.
Classroom Rules:
~Be Respectful
~Be Ready & Prepared
~Follow directions
~Stay seated
~No Disruptions
Behavior Management:
Level 1 and Level 2 acts of misconduct, as outlined in District 130's Discipline Code, will result in either a lunch or after school detention, depending on the seriousness of
the action.
Student ID's:
Students will be issued a Student ID in late September or early October. They are required to wear their ID's all day. Students who do not have their ID's will be issued a lunch detention AND will be the last students to be served lunch.
Any student who defaces, mutilates or destroys his or her ID will have it taken away and be required to replace it at a cost of $5.00. Students have 3 days to replace a lost or defaced ID before disciplinary action is taken.
Assignments & Homework:
Late work is not acceptable without a note from the parent/guardian or in extenuating circumstances. In the case of ABSENCE it is the responsibility of the student to collect all missing assignments upon returning to school. The student will have the same number of days to complete missing work as he/she has been absent (i.e. 2 days absent = 2 days to make up missing work). In the case of SUSPENSION it is the responsibility of the student and parent/guardian to get the assignments by contacting the office while the student is suspended from school. No make-up days will be given in the event of suspension.
