Nathan Hale Middle School
December 2009 Newsletter
News from Mr. Dudzik and Mrs. McNeal…..
Now that the snowy season is fast approaching, we’d like to remind you that there are a number of ways to find out if the school will be closed due to weather. Our office does not open until 7:30 a.m., so there will be no one in the office to answer your calls prior to then. However, you can check for emergency closings the following ways:
We would like to thank Office Max for choosing one of our outstanding teachers, Mrs. Marie Washack, as the recipient of their “A Day Made Better” contest. On October 6th, representatives from Office Max came to our school to surprise Mrs. Washack with over $1000 of school supplies for her classroom. Congratulations Mrs. Washack and many thanks to Office Max for their generosity and commitment to education.
On November 9th, we celebrated Veterans Day with an amazing assembly. We were honored to have as our guest Mr. Jack Hogan, a World War II veteran, who shared his memories with us. In addition, the choir and band played patriotic songs and Mrs. Gorecki produced a remarkable film of current and past Veterans. Students and staff members were asked to bring in pictures of family members who have proudly served our country. Mrs. Gorecki compiled the photos, set them to music and created a very moving presentation. We also were lucky enough to have the Band of Brothers, a bagpipe group the audience thoroughly enjoyed.
On November 16th we held a Parent Technology Night. Parents came in to learn about PowerSchool and all it has to offer. They learned how to check their student’s grades, see what assignments have or have not been turned in, and check their student’s attendance. They also became skilled at navigating our website, learning how to check for homework, see the daily announcements, calendar, and newsletter.
Our school just received approval for after-school programs that will begin in December. These programs will be funded through AARA (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act). We hope your students take advantage of these programs. We are pleased to be offering the following after school activities to our students:
After School Reading Enrichment Mathletes sponsored by Ms. Becker and Ms. Hill
Science Club sponsored by Ms. Keasler Dance Team sponsored by Ms. Boatner
Builders Club sponsored by Ms. Evers Picasso’s Panthers sponsored by Ms. Owens
Video Club sponsored by Ms. Gorecki
We will be offering H1N1 vaccines December 9th. Further information will be sent home with students as soon as everything is finalized.
Remember that students should wear their ID’s throughout the school day. We are keeping track of students who are missing their ID’s. Homeroom teachers check students to make sure they have ID’s during homeroom. When students go on a field trip, they must wear their ID. If students need a new ID, they can purchase a new one from the office. The replacement cost is $5.00. We have quite a few field trips coming up, so make sure your student has their ID before their trip day.
News from the 8th Grade Team…..
The 8th grade students will have their graduation portraits taken on Wednesday, December 2nd. Students will have their pictures taken in their cap and gown and also in their “good clothes”. We ask that our young gentlemen wear a shirt and tie and the girls wear appropriate dress wear. NO spaghetti straps, halter tops, low tops or other clothing that is not permitted by the District 130 dress code. Girls, remember that the portraits are taken from the shoulders up, so it’s not necessary to wear strappy heels to school.
The 8th grade students will be taking a field trip on Friday, December 18th to Tinley Bowl in Tinley Park. The cost of the trip is $10 per person. This price includes bowling, shoe, and ball rental. We will be eating here at NHMS before we leave.
Ms. Boatner-Reading
The students are making their way through Miracle’s Boys. By winter break we will have wrapped up the novel and will be watching the movie in class. The gifted class is making headway through the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. By winter break we will be finished with part one of the novel. Through our reading, we will be working on reading strategies, plot development, writing style, character analysis, and extended response.
Mr. Harasen-Social Studies
Our recent trip to the Museum of Science and Industry was a huge success. The 8th grade staff and our students would like to thank Mrs. Eileen Cabrera, the assistant to the president of the museum, for her generosity. Each of our students received a complimentary Omnimax ticket to the “Human Body” movie. It was an extraordinary film that our students will not soon forget. Mrs. Cabrera has a connection to Nathan Hale Middle School. All three of her sons attended Hale Middle and graduated with high honors. They continued their education and earned college degrees from major universities. We’re proud to call them successful Hale Middle School graduates.
Mrs. Hill/Mrs. Abdul-Algebra and Mathematics
First, we would like to give a big “thank you” and “good luck” to Mrs. Dana Abdul, who has been our student teacher for fifteen weeks now. Ms. Abdul will complete her student teaching experience here at NHMS on December 11th and Mrs. Hill will again be the sole teacher for 8th grade math. We wish her all the best in her future teaching career! This month, our mathematics classes will be finishing up chapter 4, which covers exponents, scientific notation, and the Pythagorean Theorem. The algebra classes will also finish up their chapter 4, covering the concepts of writing functions, graphing functions, and scatter plots.
**All math classes will be taking a cumulative final exam during the week of December 14th. This exam will cover all material that has been learned thus far (chapters 1-4 in both classes). We will spend time reviewing together in class and students will be provided with review material, but I encourage students to study outside of the classroom as well!!!**
Ms. Parham-Science
After completing Power Point Presentations and Research on the Rainforest, the 8th Grade students are on their final assignments for the study of the Rainforest. We have seen a video on the Rainforest and taken a quiz on the notes we have taken. Later in December, our Gifted class along with our other top students will be visiting the Rainforest Cafe as a culminating activity for the Rainforest topic. The Earth Science Classes have completed their oral presentations of their Power Point presentations on the Measles, Diphtheria and Smallpox. The Physical Science classes are studying mixtures, solutions, elements and compounds. They were able to complete a lab on solutions using sugar and soap to determine surface tension.
Mr. Looby-Language Arts
In Language Arts, the students have finished their Holiday Power Point projects, which were very informative and interesting. Next up is the “Great Egg Baby” project. The students will be responsible for taking care of a hard boiled egg and then journaling about it each day. The project teaches responsibility and the journals are always interesting reading. Please help by making sure your student is caring for his/her egg baby at all times while outside of school.
Mr. Jeselskis-Resource
We are currently getting ready for the high school meetings in January. The students are taking part in the Student Transition Planning Interview. This interview will help plan the students’ high school careers. Also, the students will be taking individual assessments to help the planning process with the High Schools.
News from 7th Grade…..
Ms. Evers - Reading
The 7th graders are continuing to read The Ranger’s Apprentice and The Outsiders. Everyone is really excited to learn what happens next to their protagonists. While we are enjoying these novels we are also continuing to focus on character development, making predictions and inferencing, and identifying types of conflict. We are also focusing on improving our abilities to answer extended response questions. We will be finishing the novels after Thanksgiving and begin working on our end of unit projects.
Please remember that the 2nd quarter independent novel reports are due January 5!!!
Mrs. Becker - Math
The seventh grade math classes have just completed Chapter 4, Patterns and Functions. We had a lot of fun learning about the coordinate plane, using tables and graphs, patterns and sequences, interpreting graphs and graphing linear functions. After Thanksgiving break, we will be exploring Proportional Relationships. We will be working with ratios, rates, slope and rates of change, proportions and customary measurements. The TI-30XIIS calculator is required and very helpful for the upcoming lessons.
Ms. Keasler – Science
This quarter our unit is on Weather and the Water Cycle. Students have been actively engaged in lesson delivery and activities. They especially enjoyed doing labs themselves. You might want to ask your child about tornadoes. Ms. Mulhausen, our student teacher, will being leaving us on December 11th. The students and I will miss her greatly. She has been a great asset to our classroom and the teaching profession. We wish her well and know she will do her best in the education field. We wish everyone a good winter break.
News from 6th Grade…..
Mr. Norvell –Reading
Greetings! As the holiday season draws near, I would like to take the time to wish you and your family a "Happy Holidays". We have recently finished reading our first novel Holes by Louis Sachar. The students completed a comparison/contrast chart covering Holes, the movie vs. Holes: the book. The students also created "Wanted Posters" of their favorite characters. During the month of December, some of my classes will be reading the novel Sounder by William H. Armstrong and Philip Hall Likes Me. I Reckon, Maybe by Bette Greene. My goal is to complete the novels before the students leave for Winter Break. We will focus on literary elements, comprehension, making inferences and vocabulary.
Ms. Cesaro – Language Arts
Our classes are finishing a unit on nouns and implementing an interdisciplinary unit with Mr. Mason that will require research of a science topic and writing a report. The students will also have the opportunity to write holiday letters to our service men and women deployed overseas.
News from Art…..
Art classes will soon begin using Google Sketch-up to create 3D models of components, interior design and exterior design. Students in all grade levels have an opportunity to explore art through technology. Also, the art room now has five computers with a variety of art-related programs.
News from the ALC…..
The students and staff in the Alternative Learning Center are involved in an ongoing environmental hands-on science project. We recently placed a birdfeeder and a suet feeder at the edge of the wooded area behind the ALC. So far, the winged visitors have included cardinals, blue jays and woodpeckers! The students have been learning which species of birds feed at what times of day. This “Green” project will continue throughout the year. In the spring, we plan to plant hostas around the tree that Ms. Fields, Ms. Ford, and the ALC students planted last spring. Many thanks to Mr. Green, who has helped to make this learning project a big success.
News from the Mathletes…..
Mrs. Hill and Mrs. Becker are proud to announce a new club available to Nathan Hale students! This club is called Mathletes and it is designed to challenge NHMS math students to excel in the area of problem solving and higher level thinking in math. This club will be working toward participating in local math competitions as well! Please listen to school announcements for further details!
And the winners are…..
Ms. Keasler sponsored The Great Pumpkin Decorating Contest in October. The 1st Place winner was Heather Banis. The 2nd place pumpkin was decorated by Mr. J’s mentees Kevin Courtney and Tyler Lavery, and Mrs. Ryan’s classroom decorated the 3rd place winner. Many thanks to Ms. Keasler for organizing the event!
