Our Troupe
Welcome to the Agape Dancers, the dance troupe of the St. Sophia parish. For over 30 years, the Agape Dance Troupe has been the St. Sophia outlet to teach our parish’s youth about the history and traditions of Greek Folk Dance, as well as the dances themselves. This instruction is given through a series of practices and performances throughout the school year, annually ending with the St. Sophia Greek Festival in July.
Dance Troupes The Agape Dancers are divided into two troupes based on school grade. The Junior Troupe is Kindergarten through Sixth Grade and the Senior Troupe is Seventh Grade through Senior Year of High School. Alumni members of the Agape Dancers have a cameo performance at the Greek Festival and practice in the weeks leading up to the Greek Festival. If you dancer has been performing with the Agape Dancers throughout the years, most Sixth Graders will move up to the Senior Troupe based on past commitment.
Dance Commitment So that your child has the opportunity to learn as many dances and performance techniques as possible, it is suggested you miss as few practices as possible throughout the year. Dancers who have not attended a minimum of 11 out of 17 practices, or who have not learned the taught dances, will not be permitted to perform at the Festival. If you are unable to attend the performances, we still encourage your child to attend and learn the dances for future performance. Additional Events Workshops and retreats are hosted throughout the year for the Senior Troupe to promote team and performance building through fellowship and positive Christian relationships. Your Senior Dancers are encouraged to attend these events.
Costumes The Agape Dancers have a small collection of costumes available for your children to wear for performances. If you do have your own family costumes, I encourage they be worn for performances so that our spectators may see a wide-range of authentic Greek costumes. We are currently in a fundraising drive for new costumes to be purchased for the Agape Dance Troupe. The Agape Dance Troupe also has troupe t-shirts, worn throughout the year and at the Greek Festival.
