As I always tell the new teachers that I mentor, choose one new thing a year to implement so that you have time to do it really well before moving on to something else. After attending Stephanie Harvey's "Reading Is Thinking Institute" this summer and reading a recommended book, Ladybugs,Tornadoes, and Swirling Galaxies, I have been inspired to change my Readers' Workshop to a combination Reading/Writing/Research Time. We will explore comprehension strategies from Harvey and Goudvis's book, Strategies That Work, Debbie Miller's book, Reading with Meaning, and Keene's, Mosaic of Thought. As time goes on this year, I will update this page to show how my students are using questioning and the inquiry process to "make their thinking visible." I will model what I expect them to do for the first sememster in a Reader's Workshop format based on Miller's comprehension strategies and then add the inquiry research model for second semester. We will see how it goes and report back soon!
