Math Tubs |
||
|
I am beginning to differentiate my math teaching much the way that reading is done. We have three flexible math groups in our classroom: an on level group, a challenge group, and a below level group. Math Tubs have been a lifesaver for me in implementing a differentiated program daily. Math Tubs are independent practice activities that partners take around the room and work on for 10 to 15 minutes. The skills needed for these activities have previously been taught in class. That way the tubs are an independent time while I teach guided math groups. The children are grouped by ability and move to different tables for math group instruction. One, two, or all three groups can be at Math Tubs at the same time. Since I have 27 children this year, I will need 13 tubs with one group of three to make this successful. Ideas for tubs can be found in the Math Their Way book listed below. Check your math curriculum for other activity ideas. Remember that the activities in the tubs should be familar for the children.
