The children love to
practice their weekly spelling words at Spelling Stations. These activities
take 10 minutes twice a week during Word Work time. The children practice
their ten spelling words using a variety of motor activities. They have 5 new
word wall words and 5 new word family (rime) words each week. We have one word
family (rime) a week through mid-January. Then second semester we add another
word family (rime) so that there is a long vowel family (rime) and short vowel
family (rime) to help the children understand what makes a vowel long. This
helps first graders understand how print works. Spelling at this stage
involves a lot development of reading skills.

write their ten words using different media then are free to practice
sentences, other word wall words, etc. This is a fun way to get spelling
practice in...especially for those children that do not get extra practice at
home!
