Fluency Fridays
Reading
fluency is important for reading success. Reading fluently does not mean
memorizing the text. Components of fluent reading include: word accuracy,
phrasing, rate, and expression that a reader uses while reading. A reader’s
fluency has a direct link to comprehension which is the goal of reading. When
a reader reads "choppy", the meaning is often lost. Since fluency is so
important to a 1st grader’s reading success, I have decided to use “Fluency
Fridays” as a way to practice reading fluency in a fun and authentic way. The
reading done on these Fridays should improve the fluency levels of each child.
This will begin in January for second semester once student have reading
experience underway.
On Mondays, each
student will select text to read for the class on the Friday of that week.
He/she will have a variety of choices including poems, chants, songs, reader’s
theater, and plays. The student will first read with me on Monday and then
will practice the text several times at home during the week. For some
students, the practice will need to be nightly.
Remember, memorization is not our goal. Your child should practice reading the passage in smooth phrases...not word by word. He/she should watch for punctuation...pausing at commas and taking a breath at periods. Each student should also practice reading the text at an appropriate speed, not too fast or too slow, adjusting the speed when necessary. (For example, if reading slower or faster can enhance parts, a student should feel free to adjust his/her rate of reading to achieve the desired outcome.) The student should also work on adding expression, such as reading bold-faced words more strongly or making his/her voice go up at the end of question. The goal of “Fun Fluency Friday” is for each child to read their passage fluently to enhance understanding both for the reader and his/her audience. My goal is for this newly developing fluency skill to tranfer to all reading. |
