Busy Buzzy Learning Fun in Grade One!

One Minute Math Games

One Minute Math is a fun way that we practice addition and subtraction facts in a low key, non-competitive manner.  Gone are the days of fear driven timed tests where kids dread math.   In my classroom the children love our mad minute practice because I have made it into a game so that each child competes with him/herself.  Each child has an addition and subtraction game board in their B.E.E. Keeper binder that they use to mark weekly progress.  I like the Frank Schaeffer books on fact practice because of the way that a new fact is introduced gradually while known facts are reviewed to encourage success and make memoriaztion easy.  To begin the program I give the children two minutes so that they feel success from the start.  Once they get used to the format, I drop the time to a minute and a half.  I think that the little extra time builds confidence and motivates the children to practice flascards at home because they are seeing growth on their gameboards.  Some first graders are not ready for speed and may use manipulatives with the goal to beat their own previous score by one.  In fact, that is the goal for everyone...beat your previous score by one.  You will be surprised at the outcome...Kids that love math and memorize their facts!  In this day of video games and TV...that is an accomplishment!  "Try it...you'll like it!"
