Ideas for Summer

Summertime...and the living is easy.... Are you having fun playing
outside, swimming at the pool, and just relaxing?

Don't forget to do a few minutes of reading, writing, and math every
day...especially the rainy ones! We don't want your brain to forget all
that you have learned and you need to get ready for second grade!

Here are some things you can do to be ready for second grade in August:

~Read, read, read! Read to yourself, your family, your pets, even your
stuffed animals!

~Have mom or dad or a babysitter read to you. Summer is a great time to
listen to a chapter book read aloud. How about Junie B. or Magic Tree House
books?

~Write in the summer journal that we sent home. I would love to read about
all of your adventures.

~Write a letter or postcard...especially if you go on vacation. Remember
that you have my address and e-mail in your memory book.

~Play games in the car if you are driving. Play the ABC game where everyone
looks for things that start with the letters A all the way to Z.

~Be a navigator. Help mom or dad with signs and directions.

~Practice counting in the car by ones, tens, fives, twos, threes -- whatever
you can!

~Play guess the number. Think of a number, then give "greater than, less
than" clues so someone can guess it.

~Write a poem or song. Just change the words to a tune you already know.

~Draw a picture and write about it. Or try a craft and write the directions
so a friend can make it.

~Go to a movie with your family, and then write a "review" of it. Did you
like it? Thumbs up or down?

~Go to the library on a rainy day or ANY DAY!

~Read and try out a new recipe with your mom or dad!

~Play the timer game like we did in Reading Den. See how many words can you
write in a minute? How many math facts can you write? How many spelling
words do you remember?

~Practice your first grade spelling words -- especially those tricky
words! Try making sentences for the words. How long is your longest
sentence? Go to our SchoolNotes link on the Links for Kids page to see all
of our Word Wall Words on flashcards or look in your BOAT Binder in the
middle section.

~Most of all have a safe and happy summer. We are looking for second
graders to come to Pioneer School relaxed and ready to learn.

(Thanks to Mrs. Tonnessen's First Grade Web Site for these ideas!)
