What is Synergistics?
Synergistics is a computer-based class that combines science, technology, and
engineering. Students work with a partner to complete seven days of
activities about a specific topic. The course was developed by the Pitsco
science company.
--------------------------------------
What topics are addressed in this class?
We currently have fifteen 'modules' or stations to which students are
assigned. Since they are only in the class for one semester, students will
only complete eight or nine modules. The list of modules is as follows:
1. Bioengineering
2. CADD
3. Careers
4. CNC Manufacturing
5. Computer Graphics and Animation
6. Digital Design
7. Digital Video
8. Electronics
9. Environmental Issues
10. Flight Technology
11. Forensic Science
12. Lights and Lasers
13. Plastics and Polymers
14. Robots
15. Weights and Measurements
--------------------------------------
If this class is computer-based, are there still quizzes and tests?
Students complete three types of 'knowledge surveys', which is Pitsco's
terminology for quizzes and tests.
The first knowledge survey is called the Module Guide. It is a ten-question
pre-test that students take individually during the first day at a module.
Students are given feedback on what they answered incorrectly, but no grade is
recorded for the Module Guide.
During the second, third, fourth, and fifth days, students complete RCA
quizzes. RCA stands for Research, Challenge, and Application, and refers to
the types of questions students are asked. Each RCA is only three questions
in length, and involves looking up answers in the provided textbooks,
interpreting graphs and charts, and applying mathematical formulas. Students
may work in pairs to complete RCAs, but each student records his or her own
answers for credit.
The final type of knowledge survey is the Post Test. This is taken during the
seventh day of the module. It is completed individually without the use of
books or notes.
