Happy New Year! Many of my students came back with new shoes, boots and
haircuts. They are growing! I am glad to have them back ready to learn for
the second half of the year! Our first field trip is February 12th to the
Challenger learning center where we will be going on the mission "Rendezvous
with a Comet". It is a space simulation where the children participate and
run the mission as if they are at mission control and up in space in a
shuttle. They each have jobs to do and need to work as a team to make sure
their mission is successful. We will be preparing for our mission during
January in the classroom. I would like to have 3-4 parent volunteers to help
supervise each fifth grade class. If you can help me out on February 12 it
would be much appreciated. Please let me know so I can plan our trip. Thank
you in advance!
Enjoy your week-end! Mrs. Swearingen
Classroom activities:
Reading: We are reading the novel Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. We did an author
study on Gary Paulsen and found he likes to write about adventure and life
experiences. He has quite a colorful past to draw his ideas from and uses
flashback and foreshadowing in much of his writing.
Math: We will review addition and subtraction of fractions and will move on
to graphing. Bar graphs, percent circles, stem and leaf plots and line plots
will all be discussed and practiced.
Science: The moon is our subject this week along with job applications and
Challenger Space Shuttle research to give us background for our mission. We
will be preparing to go to the Challenger Learning Center on February 12- 5S
a.m. 8:30-12 and 5T p.m. 11:30-2:30. I will need parent volunteers for both
classes to help navigate our mission. Please let me know if you are
interested in flying on the Rendevous with a Comet misson with us.
