About The School

The Regional Office of Education met its goal of opening an alternative
school that would meet the needs of the non-traditional and truant students
from school districts in Sangamon County. The Sangamon County Learning
Academy (SCLA) has small class sizes which focus on cooperative and
interactive learning strategies. SCLA serves potential dropouts, chronic
truants, and students with low attendance. Referrals come from home school
counselors or principals. The program is designed so that students have the
flexibility of either returning to their home school at the end of a
semester, enrolling in both Capital Area Vocational School and the
alternative school and/or completing the alternative program and graduating
from their home school.

Currently the SCLA and RSSP have an enrollment of over 100 students in
grades 6 through
12. The credit recovery program varies in enrollment throughout the year
from 10 -40 students.
The principal, Liz Bretz, and her staff are always willing to share
information about the Sangamon County Learning Academy with anyone
interested
in developing a program in their area.
