Kindergarten Newsletter
January/February 2012
I hope everyone enjoyed the Christmas break! I have missed the children and I
am excited to be back at school. There are going to be some changes in our
daily schedule, one of which is that we will no longer have an extended nap.
After lunch we will rest our brains and body with some quiet time and reading
from the chapter books. This will also give us extra learning time which will
be filled with “literacy centers”. Literacy centers will include group
reading, sentence making, journal, and some other hands on items I have put
together. During the winter weeks we will begin studying weather and enjoy
some cold weather food items like hot cocoa and Stone Soup. You will receive a
note regarding the making of Stone Soup which goes along with the book Stone
Soup. It is a great story with a great moral of how much better things can be
when we work together. I am going to become even pickier on the students’
handwriting, too. We will make weather journals and record the weather most
days. We will learn about the way water changes and even make snow to compare
with real snow.
Word baggie practice is critical! We have started reading and will be
assessing students in this area. Very soon Books in Bags will come home. These
books should be read every day and kept in their book bags. Please make sure
to take good care of my books so that others will be able to use them in the
future.
Another change will be journal writing. Students will be given a prompt or a
picture to write about in their journals. Every other week or so, I will be
giving the students a phonics “spelling” test. The object of this test is to
make sure the students are connecting the letters to their sounds.
Math is going to be a little more interesting too. We will begin with some
measurement with length, capacity, and weight. We have been working on simple
addition and subtraction also.
Our regular centers will now include a science area that will have something
to do with winter, weather, or an experiment. Please ask your child about the
centers. I know it sounds like all work and no play but many of the new
things we will learn will be done in fun ways or in centers.
In January we will celebrate Chinese New Year and Catholic Schools Week.
(Watch for more info in the Blue Note regarding Catholic Schools Week.)
February will include items such as Ground Hog Day, the 100th day of school
and President's Day and St. Valentine's Day. More information regarding these
days will come home in a separate note.
Rejoice in another new year and pray for God’s peace,
Mrs. Hummel
Kinder-Prep Newsletter
January/February 2012
Welcome back!
Continue to check weekly schedules regarding the happenings in Kinder-prep.
Two things that will be coming up in January are Chinese New Year and
Catholic Schools Week. (Watch the Blue Note for more information regarding
Catholic Schools Week.)
In February there will be Ground Hog Day, President’s Day, the 100th day of
school and St.Valentine’s Day. Watch for more information.
We will be assessing the students during the first 2 weeks back for report
cards. This is a critical time as these assessments are very informative on
the student’s academic levels. It is during this time that teachers determine
whether or not a student needs more time in a current grade.
Parent conferences will be schedules in February and will be very important.
A letter will be sent home indicating whether or a parent conference is needed
and a choice for your request for a parent conference.
Thank you for your continued support and cooperation,
Mrs. Hummel, Mrs. Renzetti, and Mrs. Brink
Please remember that the students will go out if the temperature is above 32
degrees. They need to have an appropriate coat, hats and gloves. Also they
need a school sweater or sweatshirt every day!
I have noticed that the students are slipping in their uniform dress. The
things that have come to my attention are:
•Socks-they need to be above the ankle and white or navy. The same
goes for tights.
•Gym uniforms-school gym uniforms are to be worn for gym along with
regular gym shoes. NO lights or sparkles!
•Belts-boys and girls are to wear belts with the uniform pants. Belts
should be plain black.
•Shirts-shirts need to be tucked in. Please teach your child how to
tuck in his/her shirt.
Thank you for your continued support, Mrs. Hummel
Public Service Announcement
Please, please, please remember that the students go out for gym and recess.
They need to have proper attire. Also. All students need to have a school
sweater or sweatshirt at school every day. Our classroom is on a boiler so
the temperature swings chilly at times during they day. Back to our regularly
scheduled newsletter!
Remember:
*Homework needs to come back every day in the folder. Missing
assignments count against incentive jean days. (more on incentive jean
day will follow later)
*Snacks should be healthy and in their own bag.
* Girls need to wear shorts under their skirts.
* Boys and girls need belts with their slacks and socks need to be above
the ankle. We will begin “uniform infractions” next week. These also
count against the incentive day.
*Dress for the weather! As the weather begins to cool students will need to
have a school sweater with them or in their locker every day. Please make sure
that a name or initials are on the label.
If you have questions or concerns please feel free to contact me. You may do
so by letter, school phone, or if it not an urgent matter, through the school
web site. I will respond at my next available moment. I will be sending home
newsletters monthly. Please read through them so that you are prepared for
questioning your child about his/her day and are aware of upcoming activities.
The school collects Campbell’s food labels and BoxTops for Education. Please
save these as they help our school purchase items that are not in the budget.
Email: Here is my email address: teacherhummel@yahoo.com . I check it at
least twice every day, once in the morning and once at night. For items that
are of a less urgent nature please use this media to contact me.
