I have been privileged to be a part of St. Josaphat for over five years now,
and I'm delighted to have been asked to be the school's general music teacher
in addition to children's music director at the parish. I consider St.
Josaphat a second home (holding true to its theme), and I've had a great time
getting to know all of my unique students.
I started singing and playing the piano from an early age. I am lucky to have
very supportive parents who nurtured my love for music by providing me with
lessons and performance opportunities. Throughout grade school I was in a
number of musicals including "Oliver" in which I played the role of Nancy.
By the time I was a sophomore, I knew I wanted to pursue music professionally.
Unfortunately, my small town (population circa 6,ooo in the Upper Peninsula
of Michigan, a.k.a. the middle of nowhere) did not afford me the luxury of
having a plethora of performance opportunities. I knew I needed to leave my
small town and study elsewhere.
I researched art high schools, and in my
Junior year I auditioned for Interlochen Arts Academy near Traverse City, MI.
In the single year I attended, I learned more about music and art than I'd
learned collectively in my prior musical experiences. In addition to music,
Interlochen, which is a private boarding academy, taught me about
responsibility, time-management, and independence. I will forever be indebted
not only to IAA, but to all of those who have taught me the art of music. I
only hope that I can have as much of an impact on my students as my former
teachers have had on me.
Looking forward to my second year here at SJS in the 2009-2010 school year!
Music has been my passion and saving grace since I was in primary school.
Learning to play instruments and singing was what I looked forward to most
while at school. Over the course of my education Ive had many music teachers,
and each of them, good or not-so-good, have influenced me to do the best I can
to bring life, love, and joy via the art of music. I believe the music
classroom should be a fun, interactive space that can serve as a safe haven
and a retreat from pencils, paper, and desks.
As the Children's Music Director, I will strive to include mass music within
my classroom. I'm excited about teaching religious music; it is one of the
most beautiful genres of music, in my opinion. I also believe Catholic school
children should be very familiar with mass music, as it is a big part of their
education and their faith.
In the 2009-2010 school year areas of study in the music classroom include:
music literacy
critical listening skills
world music & instruments
keyboarding
