Mrs. H's weekly letter
News from Sixth Grade Nov. 16, 2009
Dear 6th Grade Parents and Guardians:
The students did a beautiful job leading the Mass Friday and continue to enjoy thinking through the Free Lunch” questions Fr. Rich poses at each Junior High Mass. Be sure to ask about them. I was also very touched by their support of veterans and the fact that many of you continued that discussion at home. Thank you!
We’re trying to be very careful about using hand sanitizer regularly and coughing into sleeves instead of hands, and I hope you’ll remind them at home as well about how important these habits are.
Reminders:
o Tomorrow (Tuesday) is the final day for bowling reservations for this Saturday’s Student Leadership Bowling event. Hope students will join in the fun. o Students should be reviewing math skills and doing independent readingevery night. o Getting into the habit of writing “Study for Test” in their planners for the three nights before a test would be a great help to many.
Curriculum Updates
Language Arts: We will finish our preposition review and begin our study of direct objects. We will also finish our papers explaining what we are thankful for and why.
Math Ms. C-T: We continue to work with decimals and place value. We will be comparing decimals and estimating this week. This covers section 3.4, 3.5 and 3.6. Please encourage your student to review each night for at least 10 minutes. Thanks.
Ms. Kowieski: We are nearing the end of our unit on multiplication and division. On Monday, we will explore dividing whole numbers and decimal values by powers of ten. On Wednesday, we will review for our test on this unit, and the students will take their test on Thursday. By the end of the week, we will begin our unit on fractions.
Reading Mrs. Wolff: This week in Mrs. Wolff's class there is a book project due on Monday. We will then focus on making comparisons and predictions, and there will be a quiz on chapters 1-16 at the end of this week or the beginning of next week. There will be a vocabulary test on Friday or next Monday.
Mrs. Heineman: Students shared their historical fiction book projects today and we will finish that up tomorrow. We also discussed how to use their knowledge of characters’ motives to make predictions in Sing Down the Moon. There will be a quiz on the novel Friday. Our Vocabulary test for Lesson 7 will be next Tuesday.
Religion: We will be finishing the Bible stories in Genesis and learning the term and role of “patriarchs” in our faith. The students really enjoy having the opportunity to use their Bibles, and know they can take them home any night if they’d like to do some reading or share something we’ve read in class. We will also continue our service relationship with our preschool buddies, helping them with a special project on Friday.
Science: This week in Ms. Long's class we will continue solving problems using elimination and explore solving equations by adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. There will be a quiz over this information on Wednesday.
Social Studies: We will complete Chapter 3 and have a test either next Monday or Tuesday. The students will see direct connections between these ancient civilizations and the stories (and even vocabulary!) we are studying in the Old Testatment.
Spanish: Students will continue reading TPRS stories from lesson 13 this week. We will also be using our textbooks and workbooks to add to our Spanish knowledge. Thank you to all the families who donated candy for the troops. I know that they appreciate your thoughtfulness!
Hope you will all help your daughters and sons think of some new thing every day for which to be thankful. I am thankful for this class, the ways they care for an about each other, and for the ways they are learning to pray.
