Announcements

 

o   The fifth and sixth graders will be taking a fieldtrip to see Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Marriott Theatre on Tuesday, May 8th

o   There is a 1:30 dismissal on Wednesday, May 9th due to professional development for the teachers.

o   St. Josaphat will be celebrating May Crowning at the 10:00 mass on Sunday, May 13th. If you and your family would like to participate, please bring a flower to that mass.

o   There will be no school on Wednesday, May 16th to allow the SJS faculty to have a planning day for next year. 

o   The fifth graders will be acting as Revolutionary War characters at their Wax Museum on Tuesday, May 22nd. Please look for a flyer with the details.

o   The Spring Show is scheduled for Thursday, May 24th at 7:00. Please mark this on your calendars.



Fifth Grade Classes

o   Language Arts (Mrs. Bagdon) – Students will identify the story elements of their folk tales and will begin writing their first drafts.  Possessive nouns will be our focus this week.

 

o   Math (Mrs. Hamman) – This week we will explore graphing points and figures on coordinate planes. We will then start exploring area of figures.

 

o   Math (Mrs. C.T.) – We just completed 6.2: Natural Measures of Length.  The students had a fun time learning about cubit, fathom, great span and other units of measure.  We are now moving on to 6.3: Stem-and-Leaf Plots for Measurement. We will explore how we create a stem and leaf plot and then how we use that information in finding the range, mean, median and mode.

 

o   Reading (Mrs. Bagdon) – As we read Johnny Tremain this week, we will focus on character development.  We will also compare how the description of the Boston Tea Party in the novel gives us a different perspective than a textbook would give on the same event.  The final book project is due on Friday, May 25th.  This book must be a nonfiction book, but not a biography.

 

o   Reading (Mrs. Wolff) – This week in Mrs. Wolff's class we will continue reading IV and V and will focus on the different kinds of conflicts and solutions, on summarizing, and on character development. The book project for Friday will be moved to next Monday.

 

o   Religion (Ms. O’Brien) – In preparation for Tuesday’s fieldtrip, we will be learning about the Bible story of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Later in the week, we will be discussing child lures and ways that the students can stay safe outside of school.  

 

o   Science (Mrs. Hamman) – This week we will begin exploring the respiratory system. Students will identify and describe the parts of the respiratory system.

 

o   Social Studies (Ms. O’Brien) – This week we will be wrapping up our research for our “Wax Museum” project. The students will then begin to write a speech about their Revolutionary War character in first person.

 

o   Spanish (Ms. Monley) - This week, we will review family vocabulary, tener, ser, and the vocabulary from the last TPRS story. The students in 5B will have a test on Wednesday and the students in 5A will have a test on Thursday.

 

Sixth Grade Classes

o   Language Arts (Mrs. Bagdon) – Students will begin editing their fables this week.  We will also learn about objective pronouns in Easy Grammar.  

 

o   Math (Mrs. Hamman) – This week we will continue exploring probability concepts. The students will also discuss whether games are fair based on probability.

 

o   Math (Mrs. C.T.) – We will finish up section 6.6: Order of Operations as well as complete 6.7: Number Sentences.  We will review inequalities as we translate ideas into number sentences. Please encourage your student to complete all of their homework.

 

o   Reading (Mrs. Bagdon) - We will discuss exclusion this week as we read Stargirl.  In addition, students will learn about the literary element of allusion.  The final book project is due on Friday, May 25th.  This book must be a nonfiction book, but not a biography.

 

o   Reading (Mrs. Wolff) – This week in Mrs. Wolff's class we will continue reading the two novels and will focus on making inferences and drawing conclusion, on making connections, and on understanding how literary elements contribute to the impact of the story. There is a vocabulary test on Tuesday.

 

o   Religion (Ms. O’Brien) – In preparation for Tuesday’s fieldtrip, we will be learning about the Bible story of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Later in the week, we will be discussing child lures and ways that the students can stay safe outside of school.

o   Social Studies (Ms. O’Brien) – We will move from ancient Greece into classical Greece. This week we will learn about the Golden Age and the Peloponnesian War.

 

o   Spanish (Ms. Monley) - This week, we will learn family related vocabulary. The students will write about their family trees in Spanish, and we will play a game identifying classmates’ family members. The students in 6B need to bring a picture of a family member to class on Thursday.
