October 2009
Room 302 News
October is quickly flying by. The second graders are very excited about International Day on October
23rd. We have been learning many interesting facts about West Africa. We will learn about the type of
houses they llive in and the kinds of food they eat. We will learn how West Africans work and play.
We are using the computers and books to learn all about their culture. We will be reading a West African
folktale Anansi and the Box of Stories. We hope everyone can join us that night to visit all the countries.
On October 20th our class will be preparing the Mass for that day. We will also be the leaders of
the pledge for the school during that week.
The quarter ends on October 23rd and the students have been busy with writing stories which will
go into their portfolios. We start with story starters to give us ideas. Then we write a rough draft or
sloppy copy. After this has been proofread and corrected we rewrite the story. Each story is illustrated.
After we have completed the whole process we share our stories we have written with each other.
We will be reading about Christopher Columbus and how he became an explorer.
