Weekly Letter

November 23, 2009

              Room 201-Ms Kelly

I hope you have a wonderful and very happy Thanksgiving!

ü     Literacy Stations

ü     Phonics: students will apply knowledge of short vowel sounds /a/, /e/, /i/, /o/, and /u/ within their writing for a Thanksgiving class book.

ü     Mathstudents will understand place value concepts for tens and ones. Students will also investigate place value digit patterns.

ü     Religion: students will continue to practice and prepare for the Thanksgiving prayer service. Students will also learn how the apostles led and cared for the church.

ü     Spelling: The spelling test is on Wednesday, November 24th. If your child has list A, the words focus on short vowel /o/. If your child has list B, the words help prepare for the school spelling bee.

ü     Social Studies (Ms. White): students will conclude our Thanksgiving study by re-creating what it was like for the Pilgrims to obtain their foods without modern-day conveniences.

ü     Science (Ms. Kelly): students will review how clouds form. Students will then reread the story Little Cloud,by Eric Carle and create their own cloud design.

ü     Grammar (Ms. Veth): students will practice revising sentences that are written incorrectly.

ü     Poem of the Week: Pumpkin Pie Time- the poem focuses on long and short vowel /i/, as well as the theme of Thanksgiving. On Tuesday, we will have a treat as a surprise that correlates with the poem. Students will make and enjoy Pumpkin Pie in a Bag. If you would like to help buy the ingredients for this recipe it is greatly appreciated. Please email me if interested.

ü     Sight Words for the Week: share, give, thanks.  It is important that your child not only knows how to read each word, but also knows how to apply each word in a sentence.

Important Reminders:

v    On Wednesday, November 25, the prayer service is in the gym at 9:00. We hope you can make it. The children have been practicing very hard.

v   On Wednesday, November 25, school will dismiss at 11:30. School will resume from Thanksgiving break on Monday, November 30th.

v   Since there is no school on Thursday, the students will not be taking a spelling pre-test, so there is no spelling test the first week back after Thanksgiving break.

v    On Tuesday, December 1, we will begin our new author study: Jan Brett. We will also begin our new subject study: Christmas, winter, Advent, and snow. Please help our author and subject study by bringing in books from home or visiting the library to check out books.

v    Student Leadership is continuing to collect Box Tops. Thanksgiving is a great time to collect them, so please have your child bring them in a baggie labeled with your family name and room number. The class with the most Box Tops by December 2nd wins a Pizza Party. The family who brings in the most Box Tops wins Phat Cash.

Have a very happy and safe Thanksgiving!

Thank you,

Ms. Kelly
