First Grade Weekly News

I hope you had a wonderful weekend!

 

ü     Literacy Stations

ü     Phonics: students will continue to recognize, identify pictures and words, and write words with the sound of short vowel /u/. Students will also understand the sound of short vowel /o/ and identify pictures that contain the sound of short vowel /o/.

ü     Mathstudents will review telling time on the hour and half-hour, and be introduced to telling time on the quarter-hour.  Students will also investigate timelines, and be introduced to number scrolls.

ü     Religion: students will explore how Jesus taught his followers how to pray.

ü     Spelling: The spelling words focus on short vowel /i/ words. If your child has list B, the words help prepare for the school spelling bee.

ü     Science: (Ms. Kelly) students will understand how to use simple tools to measure weather conditions.

ü     Social Studies: (Ms. White) students will learn about how Native Americans were the first to inhabit North America, the Pilgrim’s First Thanksgiving and what Thanksgiving means to us today.

ü     Grammar (Ms. Veth) students will write question and telling sentences from the perspective of a turkey.

ü     Poem of the Week: Thank You, by Scholastic. The poem focuses on the theme of this month, as well as phonics patterns and sight words.

ü     Play and Pray Bible: The story of  Esther.

ü     Sight Words for the Week: him, look, boy, after. It is important that your child not only knows how to read each word, but also knows how to apply each word in a sentence.

ü     Word Family: students will understand the word family –est, with the story The Pest in the Nest, by Lisa Huberman.

Important Reminders:

v    There is no library this week.

v    On November 11th, the students will be visiting Little Sisters of the Poor.

v    On November 13, the students will be taking a field trip to Legoland. Your child is to wear his/her gym uniform on this day. S/he will not need a lunch. A pizza lunch will be provided at Legoland.

v    In your child’s yellow folder is the permission slip for the field trip, as well as an acknowledgement form for Little Sisters of the Poor. Your child in class went over the safety and respect rules for the facility. Please complete the forms and return to school by Wednesday, November 11.
