Fifth & Sixth Grade Gazette
May 21, 2012

Announcements

o	The fifth graders will be acting as Revolutionary War characters at their Wax Museum on Tuesday, 
May 22nd.  Please look for a flyer with the details.  Parents and relatives are invited to come from 9:00-
10:00 am.
o	Sixth grade parents- Please remind your child to bring in coins for the Wax Museum on Tuesday, 
May 22nd.
o	Mrs. Bagdon and Miss O’Brien’s homeroom will be having a pizza party during lunch on Tuesday, 
May 22.  This is a reward from Student Leadership for the number of box tops we collected.
o	The Spring Show for grades 1-8 is scheduled for Thursday, May 24th at 7:00. Students need to be 
in their classrooms at 6:35; doors will open at 6:30.  The show begins at 7:00 in the gym.
o	There is no school on Monday, May 28th in accordance with Memorial Day.


Fifth Grade Classes

o	Language Arts (Mrs. Bagdon) – Students will publish and illustrate their folk tales this week.  We 
will also wrap up the noun unit and will begin reviewing for the unit test, which will be given next 
Wednesday.

o	Math (Mrs. Hamman) – This week in Mrs. Hamman's class the students will explore finding the 
volume of prisms. We will have the Unit 9 test next week.

o	Math (Mrs. C.T.) – We are reviewing fractions still as we wrap-up Chapter 6.  Our test for this 
chapter will be Thursday/Friday of this week.  Please continue to review all of the basic facts nightly.  
We will also have a final quiz May 30th.

o	Reading (Mrs. Bagdon) – We will work on sequencing as we finish reading Johnny Tremain.  There 
will be a vocabulary test on Thursday on terms from the novel.  Nonfiction book projects are due this 
Friday, May 25th.

o	Reading (Mrs. Wolff) – This week we will continue reading Johnny Tremain, focusing on making 
inferences and drawing conclusions to improve comprehension.

o	Religion (Ms. O’Brien) – This week we will continue learning about Family Life.  We will be focusing 
on friendships, with an emphasis on the friendship that can develop into marriage.     

o	Science (Mrs. Hamman) – This week the students will learn about different respiratory system 
diseases. We will then start exploring the digestive system. There will be a quiz next week on the 
respiratory system and digestive system.

o	Social Studies (Ms. O’Brien) – This week we will be ending our time spent on the Wax Museum.  
After the Wax Museum on Tuesday, we will move on to what happens in the United States after the 
Revolutionary War.  

o	Spanish (Ms. Monley) - This week, we will begin writing an end-of-the-year skit in Spanish. We 
will form groups, and the students will write their rough drafts in class. 

Sixth Grade Classes

o	Language Arts (Mrs. Bagdon) – Students will continue to use Story bird to publish their fables.  We 
will focus on possessive pronouns in Easy Grammar.  On Friday, there will be a final test on pronouns 
covering subjective, objective, and possessive pronouns.

o	Math (Mrs. Hamman) – This week in Mrs. Hamman's class we will explore ratios, rate tables, and 
unit rates.

o	Math (Mrs. C.T.) – We continue to work with integers and inequalities.  We will be ready for our 
Chapter 6 test by Thursday/Friday of this week.  We will also have a final quiz on May 30th.

o	Reading (Mrs. Bagdon) - Students will discuss the themes of the novel as we finish reading 
Stargirl.  Nonfiction book projects are due this Friday, May 25th.  The lesson 18 vocabulary test will be 
next Tuesday.

o	Reading (Mrs. Wolff) – This week we will continue reading the two novels, looking at conflict and 
resolution, at character development, and at the impact of setting. There will be a vocabulary test on 
Wednesday.

o	Religion (Ms. O’Brien) – This week will be moving back into our religion textbooks.  We will be 
discussing the Beatitudes and how we can live out the Beatitudes to help our relationship grow closer to 
God.

o	Science (Mrs. Hamman) – This week the students will learn about different respiratory system 
diseases. We will then start exploring the digestive system. There will be a quiz next week on the 
respiratory system and digestive system.

o	Social Studies (Ms. O’Brien) – This week we will be focusing on the Greek arts, philosophy, 
democracy, science, and technology.  We will be taking time to learn about the famous Greek 
Philosophers Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle.  The test for chapters 11 and 12 will be Wednesday, May 
30th.

o	Spanish (Ms. Monley) - This week, we will begin writing an end-of-the-year skit in Spanish. We 
will look back at last year’s skits, and the students will write their rough drafts in class. The students in 
6A will have a test on Wednesday.
