Writer's Workshop
Students in first grade are beginning writers. The work on this page is
student-perfect
, a term I use to describe the developmental level of learners as they grapple with spelling and grammatical conventions in their creative writing. Unless noted, all work is
student-perfect
.
Note: Due to technical difficulties, the selections are not in chronological order. Please scroll through to find new updates for May.

Ones upon a time, long ago, lived a mean squirrel. He tried to eat everybody and they scremed for help. Nobody herd them but one little nice squirrel said "I will help you" and so she did. The mean squirrel lerned how to be nice and they lived happly ever after.

One time during the day I saw a white and brown rabbit. It was very shy and quiet. The rabbit came into my house. It was eating healthy snacks and took a nap in my bed. The rabbit woke up and broke everything by hopping around the house. My mom and dad were mad and put the rabbit back outside the house.
Keyaira
If a Raccoon live(d) in my house it will urinate on the floor. A Raccoon will not be be happy in my house, it is too noisy during the day while a Raccoon need(s) to sleep. The Raccoon will eat anything we eat. The Raccoon will eat things like books, my homework, and break things like television sets, stereo sets and glasses. I do not think anything funny will happen while a raccoon is living inside my house.
Giovani
It would not be good for a ant to be in the h ouse. It does not belong in the house. Ants live in the ground.
Amira
The bird tweets and flies. He flew through the window. He was not happy. Grandma was not happy. Mommy let it out the window.

One day when I went outside to play I saw a squirrel running wild around the yard! And then I saw a squirrel climbing a tree stump she was very quiet. Then there was a squirrel in the corner I took a step closer and it was so shy it ran away. And then it was night I did not see any squirrels and then I said they must only be day visitors.
Kylie
Once upon a time there was a squirrel. The squirrel climbed up my house, then he wanted a house too. He was huge and grey. He found nuts.

Students wrote about things they do with their families:
It's awsome to have a family. My family rides in the car to get pizza. We go to resterants. "WOO" I say. "WOO" my brother says. I am so happy to have a family.

MARCH
After reading the story,
George Shrinks
by William Joyce, the students responded to the prompt:
Would you like to be small like George? Tell what it would be like.
I would not like to be small because I love my mom and if I'm small then when she kissess me my hole body will be slimie. And if we were at Nannys house Ca$h would lick me to death. And in conklushin Ca$h is a cute puppy. [If I was small] my daddy might step on me anytime.
Chase
If I was small I wold get a ride on my dogs back and not do homework anymore. I would eat some cake and I wold look at stars. I wold not be found at all.
Keyaira
YES I would like to be small like George because I've allways dreamed of being small so thats why I want to be small. When I watch T.V. I'll have to jump on the button to change the chanel To let my dog out I'd have to climb the cage and open it, climb the door and open the door.
Solomon
I would not want to be small because if a cat or a dog were around and they did not see me I would get smushed! And I'd probibly get steped on by feet. And if someone spiled foo[d] it woul get all over me. And if people were playing Wii [and] if the centroller fell if it landed on me it would defently hurt! And if I was in school I would not be able to see over my desk. On the rug I would get sat on. So I don't want to be small. Because on the playground I mite get hit by a basketball. And if someone axedently nocked over a playground cone and I was under it and they picked it up I would be traped. And if a purson nocked over a book and it fell and I did not see it it would land on me and I'd be smushed. So I would defently not want to be small.
Kylie
