News From Room 254           November 6, 2009

Monday – Our Journal entry had us writing about our Halloween.  New spelling words were introduced and the blend and vowel sound in each word was identified.  In Reading, we previewed our first anthology story in our new theme “Let’s Look Around”.  It’s called Seasons.  In Math, we subtracted from nine and ten in horizontal and vertical form.  During Religion, we reviewed the material covered in the chapter Jesus Gives Us the Eucharist.  In addition, we discussed what we do at Mass… we pray, sing, and listen at Mass to praise God and remember His love for us.  Computer and gym were our specials.

Tuesday – Our Phonics activity had us working with l blends.  We met our goal.  We came up with at least six words for each of the following l blends: pl, bl, cl, fl, gl.  We illustrated our Spelling words.  Our writing activity had us drawing and describing a bug.  We read our new anthology story.  We worked with the *ack word chunk family and completed a short a word review.  During Religion, we discussed saints.  From our discussion we concluded that saints are followers of Jesus who have died and are with God in Heaven.  We thought of some saints familiar to us like: Saint Mary, Saint Joseph, Saint Patrick, Saint Dominic, and Saint Therese.  How did they become saints?  They loved God, tried to share God’s love with others and lived the way Jesus asked them to.  Then we each drew a picture of someone who touched our lives who followed Jesus and now live forever with God.  They too are saints.  In Math, we played the “I Am Game” as we drilled our subtraction facts from ten and under.

Wednesday – We reviewed our spelling words as we completed sentences using some of our words.  We were really excited when we could choose one of our spelling words and write our own sentence.  In Phonics, we continued to work with the l blends.  We re-read our anthology story Seasons.  We discussed different activities one could do during a particular season and if this author did a good job showing this in her story.  We completed some reading activities which included working with words that contain a double consonant and identifying words naming more than one.  Our Journal entry had us writing what we enjoy doing with a friend.  In Math, we subtracted from eleven and twelve.  We read and discussed the story Pumpkin Pumpkin.  It was a good lead in as we prepare to plant our pumpkin seeds.

Thursday – It was “an anything we want to write day”. We’re working on ABC Order.  We succeeded in putting two or three words in alphabetical order.  We read the “Big Book” story Pearl’s First Prize Plant.  We really liked the story and how the story was illustrated.  We now have a good idea on what happens at a State Fair.  We completed some reading activities. This included working with words containing the short a, a comprehension check of the story Seasons and working with the story vocabulary.  A Phonics check-up was given to note understanding of beginning and ending consonant sounds.  We planted our pumpkin seeds.  Now we watch and wait for some activity.  Will we have a green thumb?  We also are observing the role of roots.  We have set-up our experiment.  We will see what happens to the plant’s roots in five days.  We completed a progress check on math covering subtraction.  We also practiced using a number line to count back.

Friday – We attended an all-school liturgy.  A Spelling test was taken.  We re-read Pearl’s First Prize Plant.  Our reading skills had us learning about the Topic, Main Idea and Details to support the Main Idea.  We completed an activity on this concept.  We practiced writing sentences… remembering to begin them with a capital letter and ending them with a period.  In Phonics, we worked with the high frequency words:  I my here the with said.  In Math, we worked on recognizing patterns in subtraction.  We’re working on learning special poems and songs that we hope you will enjoy at our Thanksgiving Program on Tuesday, November 24th at 10AM in the lunchroom.
