News From Room 254           November 13, 2009

Monday – Our Spelling words this week will be with the blends cr, fr, and sl.  Our Phonics activity had us coming up with words containing the following r blends:  gr, tr, br, cr, pr, fr, dr.  In Reading, we took a sneak preview of our next story Mr. C’s Dinner.  Our reading activities had us working with short vowel sounds, an introduction to the endings s, ed, or ing added to a base word, and learning how we use the ‘s (eg. Matt’s hat… showing ownership of something).  Of course, we couldn’t wait to write in our Journals as it was “an anything we want to write day”.  In Math, we identified the related subtraction facts when subtracting from twelve or less.  We like going to the board and showing that we understand the concept introduced.

Tuesday – We wrote sentences using our Spelling words.  During Phonics, we completed an oral drill identifying the blend in a given word.  Sometimes a word was given without a blend just to keep “254 friends” on their toes.  We worked with the word chunk families *at, *an, *ad, *ap as we completed a practice activity.  Another new math concept was introduced.  We found the sum for an addition fact and then had to show the related subtraction fact.  We practiced this concept by going to the board.  We continue to work on our Advent Musical “Stary Night, Noisy Night” with Mrs. Cantagallo.  We earned seven stars once again.  A fun project was making turkey windsocks today.

Wednesday – We worked with the short a sound in Phonics.  We illustrated our Spelling words.  We read Mr. C’s Dinner.  We completed some Veteran Day activities as we remember those who serve and are serving our country.  In Math, we worked with identifying the related subtraction fact when subtracting and completing an addition fact and showing the related subtraction fact.  We then turned the table over and completed a subtraction fact and showed the related addition fact.  Lots of boardwork practice again.

Thursday – We attended an all-school Mass.  We practiced putting our Spelling words in ABC Order.  We’re becoming pros doing three words.  We even tried four words.  We completed a practice ABC activity.  Most “friends” did quite well.  We re-read Mr. C’s Dinner.  Our reading activities had us completing a comprehension check of the story.  We all did a “great” job.  In addition, we worked with our story words and words to be mastered.  Another skill had us working with the short i as well as the short a.  Math was strictly a good review of the three new concepts introduced this week.  During Science, we observed and recorded the happenings of our two Science experiments.  We were excited to see what happened to our pumpkin seeds as well.  The seeds have sprouted in 16 of the 17 cups.  Some even have two sprouts.  We could see the seed coat still attached to Shane’s sprout.  Roots can be seen as we planted our seeds in clear plastic cups.  So we all are very excited.  Terrariums are producing their own precipitation so all is well in our greenhouse.

Friday – We took our Spelling test.  We read our next Big Book selection Hilda Hen’s Scary Night.  We liked predicting what might be scaring Hilda Hen.  In all cases, it wasn’t what Hilda Hen thought.  Our reading skills had us working with blends, contractions, and classifying.  We finished up our review of the short a during Phonics.  Again we reviewed new concepts learned this week in math.  We then put this all together and made fact families.  During Religion, we learned more about what we say and do at Mass.  We practiced our poems and songs we are learning for our Thanksgiving program.
