News From Room 254           May 28, 2010

Monday – We began with an “anything we want to write day” in our Journals.  We went over our final Spelling word list.  We re-read our anthology story, The Surprise Family.  We worked with our story vocabulary, words to master, and completed a comprehension check of this story as well.  Other skills included working with possessive pronouns, comparing and contrasting by showing likes and differences, and working with the vowel sounds oy and oi.  We practiced counting the value of different coins and showed different ways to make a dollar.  We had our final computer class.

Tuesday – Our writing activity had us putting the finishing touches on our Four Seasons Booklets.  We wrote ten of our own Spelling sentences.  We’re really doing quite a nice job on this.  We completed a Reading theme test covering phonics, reading for comprehension, and grammar skills.  We worked with the verbs do/did.  During Religion, we discussed what happened on Pentecost and what the apostles did after receiving the Holy Spirit.  We completed a progress check in math on: identifying amounts of money, comparing amounts of money to prices, and identifying groups of coins whose value is a dollar.  We also completed a chapter test on adding 2-digit numbers with and without regrouping.

Wednesday – We put our Spelling words in ABC Order and practiced writing dictation sentences.  We completed another reading test.  This test covered phonics, reading, and grammar skills in addition to writing.  Another check on adding 2-digit numbers with and without regrouping was completed.  In addition a check on progress of concepts presented on money and time was given.  In Religion, some of the concepts covered in the Unit Jesus Teaches Us About God’s Love were reviewed.

Thursday – We attended an all-school liturgy.  Afterwards Mrs. Haravon and Mrs. Singsank were honored for their twenty-five years of teaching at Saint Mary as well as Mr. Case and Mr. Healy for their thirty-five years of service to our school.  We sure enjoyed illustrating our final Spelling words in first grade.  We completed a final wrap-up of grammar skills introduced and learned throughout this past school year.  In Reading, we focused on a type of story… a folktale.  We learned that a folktale is a story that has been told and passed down through the years from one family to the next.  Finally, it is re-told and written so we have the opportunity to read them.  We read the folktales “Sister Hen’s Cool Drink” and “What is in Mole’s Sack”.  Other ones recognized were: “Grasshopper and Ant” and the “Tortoise and the Hare”.  We again completed a time and money check.

Friday – We took our final Spelling and dictation test.  Our writing activity had us writing about our favorite kind of weather.  We took a sneak preview of our next anthology story, Two Greedy Bears.  We were surprised on what happened when the two greedy bear cubs want the same piece of cheese.  Math had us focusing on identifying open and closed figures and counting sides and corners of plane figures.  In Social Studies, we discussed the significance of Memorial Day.  In Religion, we continued to discuss some important concepts of our faith.
