NOVEMBER/DECEMBER HIGHLIGHTS
Religion
November 1st is All Saints Day. The first graders gave a special Saints
Presentation to their eighth grade buddies. Ask your child about their
special saint. November 2nd is All Souls Day. The first graders may bring
a photo of a deceased relative or friend whose memory we will honor by
placing their picture in our prayer corner.
Our annual November Dinner Auction project is a set of three beautiful
paintings. The first graders are very proud of “God’s Creation”.
During Advent we will begin each day with prayers and a reading from the Old
Testament as we place a symbol on our Jesse Tree that tells the story of
Jesus’ birth. Christmas is a time to share our gifts. I hope the children
will be generous with their mission donations. (Those quarters add up!)
Language Arts
Language arts activities continue as the children read and respond to the
literature through journal and story writing. We will be discussing
setting, characters, main idea, and comparing and contrasting stories. We
will begin to identify nouns, adjectives, and verbs. The children are proud
of their reading progress.
Science/Social Studies
Junior Achievement teacher has been instructing the children on wants,
needs, jobs, goods, and services. The children have been thinking about
different jobs and what career they would like to have some day.
Science activities have included the study of animals, food chains, and
habitats. I hope you all enjoyed the weather as you helped with the leaf
collections. I can’t forget to mention the snappy science songs the first
graders have been learning.
Math
Math concepts covered will be geometry, fractions, symmetry, probability,
and numbers through 100. It is helpful to the children if they practice
math facts and count money. We will begin the money unit after Christmas
break.
We will be taking a field trip to the Marriott Theatre for their
presentation
of “A Christmas Carol” on Thursday, December 3rd.
Thank you for all of your support in reading with your child at home.
The extra practice and your praise for their efforts make a huge difference
in their school experience.
Have a blessed Thanksgiving and Christmas.
