Computer Grades K-2

Kindergarten

In computer class, kindergarten students have many experiences. Students are taught some of the basic parts of the computer including the monitor, cpu, keyboard and mouse. They gain proficiency in manipulating the mouse to point and click, click and drag, select an icon or item on a menu bar, and start a program. Besides being able to identify and use the letter and number keys, they learn the space bar, return key and delete/backspace keys.

Throughout the year, students will use a variety of programs to reinforce classroom skills and subjects including math, language arts, social studies, science and religion. Activities in computer class are often a reflection of the theme or topics currently being covered in the classroom. Students are also taught how to use painting and drawing tools to complete a story or demonstrate knowledge about a particular topic.

They will be practicing the mechanics of creating a capital letter, using the space bar and simple punctuation. As the year continues students will be constructing words using programs from the Tenth Planet Literacy series and improving their skills telling time and counting money.

Second Grade

Second grade students will use a variety of programs to reinforce language arts and math skills as well as topics currently being studied in social studies and science. They will use the Kidspiration program as a graphic organizer to explore a variety of concepts. Later in the year they will use Microsoft Word to create simple sentences.
