Frequently Asked Questions

  2. Is it important to keep practicing all math facts?
  3. How much time should my child spend on homework?

Why does my child need to read daily?

Fourth grade is a crucial point when children begin to develop comprehension strategies.
Each month a comprehension strategy will be introduced.
The best way to excel in the strategy is to practice.
Reading daily will give your child an opportunity to practice the strategy in addition to
past strategies. Research shows reading increases vocabulary, spelling, background knowledge,
and writing skills. Reading daily also increases fluency and speed. I suggest you listen to
your child read a few times a week and ask questions to make sure they are using those strategies.

Is it important to keep practicing all math facts?

Yes!! All math in fourth grade will be based on addition, subtraction, multiplication,
and division facts. We will be learning double digit multiplication and division.
The more automatic the facts are to the student, the easier time they will have learning
new skills. Addition and subtraction are the most common errors while performing
multiplication and division computations.

How much time should my child spend on homework?

Studies have shown children should spend 10 minutes per grade
on homework to practice skills learned during the school day.
This does not include reading. In fourth grade that would equate
to 40 minutes plus reading time. Homework will be given daily to
practice skills independently and for the child to gain confidence.
If your child is struggling with a topic, please write a note and we
can work more individually the next day. Please do not complete any
homework for your child. It alters any assessment I will have on your
child's understanding.
