January Class Notes
Happy New Year.
Welcome back to school.
The sixth grade has hit the ground running. We are in full swing.
In literature class we are reading non-fiction in reading circles. The
subject of the non-fiction is ancient Asia. This is a good crossover of
social studies. Students will be practicing their note taking skills as well
as their “real reading” skills.
In language arts class we have begun Chapter 16 – Verbs. Students will we
defining more language parts and will also begin to write five paragraph
expository essays in class.
In science class we will finish the water unit by studying the different
ocean environments. Our next unit will be “Ecology”. This is great
preparation for Outdoor Education, which takes place in March.
In social science class we have begun our unit on ancient China. Students
will be focusing on the different dynasties of this ancient land as well as
celebrating Chinese New Year at the end of the month.
In religion class we are still focusing on the Old Testament. The next few
chapters will revolve around Abraham and Jacob.
Sixth grade has grown by leaps and bounds this year. We write in formal
standard English, in full sentences and using correct spelling. We have
learned about the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt and the Indus
Valley. We are anxiously looking forward to ancient Greece and Rome. We are
looking forward to learning about ourselves, each other, working as a team,
survival skills, and many other lessons in Outdoor Education.
