Spanish/Español

Bienvenidos / Welcome...
...to the world of Spanish at St. Raphael Catholic School!  Sra. Fey teaches Spanish every Wednesday and Thursday.  All classes have Spanish two times weekly.  Kindergarten through Grade 2 have Spanish for 15 minutes per class.  Third and fourth grades study Spanish for 30 minutes every Wednesday and Thursday.  Spanish classes last 42 iminutes n Grades 5 through 8.

Homework
       *  Kindergarten - Grade 3 has no homework.
       *  Grade 4 - Grade 8  has homework almost every Wednesday and Thursday.
       *  Two types of homework:
                a)  5-10 point assignments  -  Some examples:  copying vocabulary words, coloring a picture,
parental signature, or similar aactivities.  If a student does NOT complete this assignment,
the grade will be a 0.  This homework can't be made up for the required points, UNLESS a
a student is absent.  Then full credit will be given.
                  b)  Graded assignments for daily work  -  If a student does NOT turn in an assignment, the grade
will be lowered 5 points for each day that it is late.  If a student is absent, he/she will have the
same number of days to complete the assignment.

Tests and Quizes
In grades 5-8 most tests will be given a double grade.  The students are always informed of this.  Example:  If a
child receives a 94 on a test, that grade is entered two times.  A quiz is always entered as one grade only.

Fiestas
At the end of October, students in Grades four through eightwill participate in a "mini fiesta," a very special
religious holiday in Mexico.  The children will eat pan de muertos, a typical holiday sweet-bread baked at an authentifc Mexican bakery.  (The bread is peanut-free so there is no need to worry about children who are sensitive to peanuts.)

Field Trip
Each year the eighth grade students visit the Mexican Fine Arts Cultural Center Museum in Chicago to view the
Day of the Dead exhibit of altars, commemorating the deceased.  (This holiday corresponds to All Souls" Day.)  The students also watch Mexican artisans make sugar skulls.  Everyone has an opportunity to buy sugar skulls of their choice.  This very popular trip ends with lunch at a Mexican restaurant.
