Vocabulary

Week 1:

Line- element of art used to define outline, a continuous mark

Organic- curved, natural, freeform

Geometric- mathematical, straight-edged

Outline- lines made by the edge of an object

Contour lines- lines thatd efine the edge of an object and the details within

Gesture- quick sketch to capture movement

Interpreatation- an explanation of the meaning of a work of art.

Week 2:

Dire- extreme suffering or trouble

Innovative- modern, new things or methods

Peddle- to sell things from place to place

Art Movement- an "ISM", an artistic style that is used by a group of artists who use the same philosophy or techniques

Freewheeling- no self-control, lacks restraint

Rowdy- rough, disorderly, loud

Idol- image representing a diety or god

Glimpse- a passing look

Sculptor- artist whose work has 3 dimensions

Elongate- to lengthen

Distort- disproportionate

Trademark- a distinctive feature

Subtle- delicate, mysterious

Week 3:

Value- the lightness or darkness of a color or neutral grey

Hatching- using lines to create value

Stippling- using dots to create value

Blending- using gradual tones to create value

Week 4:

Shape: a 2D space enclosed by a line

Form: a 3D shape

2D: flat, having only 2 dimensions

3D: having 3 dimensions

Week 5:

Texture- surface quality or how soemthing feels

Frottage- texture technique, rubbing the texture of an object onto another surface

Gyotaku- fish rubbing

Gyo- fish

Taku- rubbing

Week 6:

Frequently- often

Conviction- firm beleif

Ancestry- heritage, family background

Colonized- taken over by another group of people or country

Multiple- many

Infinite- never-ending

Spontaneous- without planning

Abandon- leave, let go

Week 7:

Optical Perspective- Optical techniques used to create the illusion of space

Horizon- imaginary line where the sky meets the earth

Perspective- technique artists use to project the illusion of 3 dimesions on a 2-dimensional surface

Overlapping- One object is partially in front of another

Optical- dealing with vision or optics

Vanishing Point- the point at which all lines converge or meet
