DUKE ELLINGTON

  • Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington was born April 29, 1899.
  • He received the nickname Duke from a childhood friend who admired him for his manners and style
  • Ellington was born in Washington, D.C.
  • In the early 1920's he moved to New York City and started a band.
  • Duke composed over 2000 songs.
  • His career spanned 50 years and included more than 20,000 performances in the US and abroad.
  • Ellington was a pianist, composer, bandleader, and recording artist.
  • He remains one of the most influential figures in Jazz music even today.
