Hello!
I am very excited to be teaching at music at both Ledgewood and Stone Creek
for the seventh year and to be a part of the Kinnikinnick School District. I am looking
forward to a great year with all of the students as we explore the world of
music together.
I did my undergraduate work at the University of Illinois in Urbana-
Champaign. I graduated in 1993 and have been teaching music ever since. I
have had the opportunity to teach students in grades K-12 and have taught
instrumental music, choral music, elementary music, and art and music
appreciation at one time or another over the past 12 years.
In 2001 I completed my Master's degree at VanderCook College of Music in
Chicago, which has one of the finest graduate programs for music educators
in the country.
Simply put, the mission for the class is to learn about, appreciate, and
produce music in a variety of styles and from a variety of cultures.
Lessons for the class are based on the district Fine Arts curriculum and the
Illinois State Standards for the Fine Arts. My instructional approach is
largely based on the Orff Schulwerk approach to music education. "Orff
Schulwerk is a pedagogical approach that begins with the premise that all
students can make music regardless of age or formal training. It begins with
speech and movement, and literacy is a large component. However, it's
ultimate goal is creativity, i.e. improvisation, composition and self-
expression through musical interpretation." (Jean Hersey)
Our lessons include things such as singing, movement, poetry, improvisation
and writing. One great aspect of the Orff approach is that is allows
students to experience immediate success in creating their own melodies
through improvisation.
To help your student be successful, one of the best things you can do is
read with them and encourage expression in their reading.
