Resource with Mrs. Poycker

Welcome back to school! The summer just flew by, and here we are back
at school ready to learn new skills and reinforce old ones. This year our
class consists of 2nd and 3rd grade students. Several new faces are a welcome
addition to our class, as well as returning students
who I am thrilled to work with again. We will spend the first few weeks
reviewing skills previously taught, assessing which skills
we need to reinforce, and others that have been retained over the summer.
Next week,(August 30), we will begin our weekly Spelling units.
Students will write their weekly Spelling words each Monday, and bring the
list home to be studied throughout the week. On Tuesdays
we will be typing our Spelling words, and also bringing those lists home for
review. Tests will be given on Friday.
Reading groups will also begin next week. Our Reading curriculum
consists of phonics, comprehension, and word attack skills. I would like to
emphasize the importance of Reading at home.
Although there will not be assigned Reading homework, I would like each
student to spend a little time at home each night reading silently, orally, or
even listening to someone else reading to them. This extra practice is so
beneficial to all students who are learning and developing Reading skills.
Our English curriculum will consist of Shurley English which all students
will participate in within the regular classroom, and writing and grammar
skills. We will be writing daily, in journals or on larger
essay or 4 Square writing assignments. I also plan to have the students work
on basic language skills such as sentence formation, nouns, verbs, etc.
In Math we will begin with Addition and Subtraction review. Daily time
tests will be given, and each day we will work on a word problem. At the
beginning of the year we will solve these problems together. As the year
progresses students will be expected to solve these problems independently.
Our goal in our classroom is to help our students strengthen their basic
skills, give reinforcement and support to skills taught within the regular
education classroom, and introduce new academic skills. As I said earlier, I
am thrilled to be back at work! It looks like it will be a wonderful school
year! If at any time, you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at
