Something You Should Know About 5th Grade in Room 213
  1. Does my child have homework everyday?
  2. What are the requirements for book reports?
  3. What is the discipline policy for Room 213?

Does my child have homework everyday?

Yes, every 5th grade student is required by the Chicago Board of
Education to do 45 minutes of homework every evening.
My requirements are that students must read every evening and
also do any assigned homework. I will not give homework on the
weekends. This is time to do recreational reading and work on
long term projects. Everyone needs time off to relax. Yes, even
teachers want to have FUN!
Homework will be posted every evening so you will know exactly
what was assigned. We will try our very best to do this every
evening but if we don't you child still has their homework
notebook that they are required to fill out everyday. The
homework is written on the front white board and they are given
time to copy the assignments. We are trying to foster
responsibility so that middle school will be an easy transition.

What are the requirements for book reports?

The Board of Education required that every 5th grader read 25
books during the year and recorded on the report card every
quarter. In room 213, each student has a notebook that they are
required to record the books they have read. I will also assign
about two book reports every quarter that will be graded as a
reading grade. These reports will have definite instructions and
skills that will be assessed. The assigned reports are very
important and will come with a deadline and rubric. The goal is
to complete reading 25 books by June 2011.

What is the discipline policy for Room 213?

Discipline! I must admit that discipline is not very high on my
classroom list. The students are told on the first day what is
required of them and they are very repectful of the rules at TCA.
If a problem does occur I will speak to the student privately
from there if that doesn't make an impression the parents will be
notified. When it is necessary to go even further all parties
involved, student, teacher, and parent will meet with the
assistant principal and a solution will be developed.
Little solutions as silent lunch, timeout and letters describing
the problem will be used to correct small infractions
immediately.
