  Literature Circles

If you enter our classroom, you may be surprised to see students sitting around the room in circles on beanbags, chairs, or pillows. They will be reading, discussing, questioning, or maybe even performing a passage from a book. Once a month our class participates in a full literature circle project. Students vote on books selected from the author study of the month for their group to read. Once they have chosen a book they are given roles for their literature circle discussions. The roles we use are based on Amanda Madden's literature circle roles. The roles are Discussion Director, Super Stroyteller, Wacky Wordfinder, Artful Artist, and Passage Performer. In September our groups chose Arthur's New Puppy, Arthur Meets the President, and Arthur's Chicken Pox. Each group filled out role sheets, participated in circle discussions, shared reading, and completed a final extention project for their book. Two of the groups chose to make a bookmark based on their book, while another group chose to make a story chain. Pictures coming Soon!

We have 10 spelling words and 6 sentences every week. On Mondays I give a pretest on the spelling words. The class rewrites any misspelled words. The students copy the sentences, and I check them to make sure they have written them correctly. The spelling and sentence list for each week will be in the students' Binders. Tests are on Fridays. The spelling test and sentence test count as two spelling grades. The sentences are graded for correct spelling and punctuation.
