What should my child be working on currently?

While preparing for kindergarten, you should be reading books
with your child about school, talking about meeting new friends,
and following school rules. For some children, leaving their
parents for school is extremely difficult. Talk to your child
about their feelings and practice separation by dropping them off
at a friend's house for a playdate. Visit the school playground
and make up stories together to start thinking about what school
might be like. Help your child draw pictures about their fears
and/or excitement about school. Most of all, tell them that you
are sending them to school because you love them and they will
learn a lot and have fun.

How does the kindergarten curriculum meet the needs of all children?

Children of all levels are challenged in kindergarten. All
children are reading and writing at their own level. Because of
this, all student feel success and are challenged at the same
time. The students all read one-on-one, in groups, partners, and
with the whole class as well as with older reading buddies.
Writing is also done individually, as a whole class, and
occasionally in groups. Math activities are broken up into
individual work, partner work, and group work. Any child who has
mastered a skill will not be expected to continue working on that
particular skill. They will be moving on to the next skills in
that area.

What should I do if my child is going to go home a different way than normal?

If your child is going home with someone different, that person
MUST be listed in the office as an alternate pick up person. A
note also MUST be given to the teacher. If your child is going
to get picked up instead of taking the bus, a note is also
necessary.

What is my child's reading buddy?

Kindergarteners all have a third grade reading buddy. This is a
third grader that meets with them once a week to read and/or make
books together. This helps kindergarteners feel more a part of
the school and helps them make more friends in the school.
Sometimes a buddy is a neighbor, friend, or sibling.

What can my child bring for a snack?

You can send anything that is HEALTHY. Crackers, pretzels, plain
popcorn, yogurt, fruit, veggies, etc. No junk food will be
allowed such as cookies, chips, candy, etc. Snack time if 2-5
minutes each day, so please send in a small snack so your child
isn't disappointed that they can't eat it all. Also, only water
bottles are allowed in the classroom. Juice spills and ruins
papers and supplies that are on the table. Water must be in a
bottle with a pop-up top or sippee lid for minimal spilling (no
screw on caps). For birthdays, your child is allowed to bring in
treats, but they MUST be individually wrapped for each child.
This is due to allergies. A child that has food allergies can
take their treat home, since it is wrapped, and their parents can
decide if they can eat it or not. Any snacks or birthday treats
that do not fit these guidelines will have to be sent back home
due to the school's policy.
