Social Studies and Classroom Meetings

March/April: During March and April we are learning about the many different
kinds of places that people live throughout our own country and throughout
the world. We are recieving letters from friends and/or family members who
live in other places to learn more about what it is like there. We then are
plotting these places on a map in school to help us keep track of the places
we have learned about. International Week and Earth Week integrate nicely
into this unit.

February: This month the children will be learning all about the role of our
President. We will talk about our current president as well as important
president's from long ago (George Washington and Abraham Lincoln). We will
learn what good leaders do, talk about President's Day, and learn about Flag
Day.
January - We are learning about needs and wants and what the difference is
between the two. This leads us right into our discussions about careers and
different types of jobs. This month we will have career days where
volunteers can come in and teach us all about the job that they do!
December: We are learning about the many ways that people celebrate with
family in the month of December. We are also talking a lot about fairness
and how to treat others in a kind and helpful way.
October/November: We have had a few class meeting by this time. The
children are learning to take turns and respect others when it is their turn
to talk. Active listening is being encouraged and modeled for the students
so they learn to listen to others as they like to be listened to when sharing
ideas. During the next month in social studies, we will be reading about
many famous people in history including Christopher Columbus, Helen Keller,
Rosa Parks, and Betsy Ross. We will learn how life was different long ago
before the currect technologies and advances were invented. During November
we will focus on elements of and types of families.
September: This month we are focusing on ourselves and what makes each one of
us special and important.
