The students that I work with usually do not have homework from me unless I
give them an assignment to replace one they would have gotten from their
classroom teacher. For example, each week I give some second graders
different spelling words than those given by the second grade teachers. Since
I give these students spelling homework, they do not have to do the spelling
homework assigned to the other second graders.
I also invite the first and second graders I work with to borrow one or two
books from me every day or so. Often these books are at the child's reading
level so he/she can read it independently or almost independently. Please
encourage your student to read these books to you. Many times he/she will
borrow the same book or books over and over. That's fine. They are learning
to love reading and are developing favorites!
