SCHOOL NEWS:

Please turn in the Scholastic News money ($5.00) as soon as possible and make checks directly payable to Scholastic News.

Don’t forget: our Woodland PTA collects Campbell's UPC, Swiss Valley Milk Jug Caps, Tyson A+ labels, and Capri Sun Juice pouches.

With the extreme heat, please send a plastic bottle of water to school each day in order for students to stay hydrated.
Please DO NOT let your children bring toys on the bus or to school. The bus drivers and I will keep any toys until the end of the year. Thank you for your help.

CLASSROOM NEWS:

WHAT WE'VE BEEN DOING
Reading  We are currently becoming familiar with the third grade Language Arts Series called Reading Street. We are practicing guided reading procedures and independent work, while learning  genres, comprehension skills and strategies.
Please look for the "Reading Street Newsletter" that will go home at the beginning of each story.  It will summarize the story and identify the skills and vocabulary words we're working on.

Spelling We take a spelling pretest on Monday. The pretest consists of 15 words.
If a student misses 0 or 1 words on the pretest, they will practice the 5 challenge words plus the 1 word they misspelled for the test on Friday.
If a student misses 2-4 words on the pretest, they will practice 15 words for the week.
If a student misses 5 or more words on the pretest, they will practice 8 or 10 of the core words for the week.
The spelling test will be on Friday. Students will be tested solely on the words highlighted on their list.
Each night your child will have spelling homework to complete.
This will be explained on Curriculum Night.

Writing  In the weeks ahead, we will be learning sentence formation, subjects and predicates, and types of sentences.

Science/Social Studies We have begun our first science unit on Health. After that, students will learn about the history of Chicago, including Fort Dearborn, the Industrial Revolution, and the Chicago Fire. Check out the Social Studies and Science links for places to visit about Chicago on the web.

Math
Please look for the "Math Trailblazers" newsletter that goes home at the beginning of each unit.

Please remember to call the OFFICE or write a note for the office when your child is going to be absent.  Also, write a note for the office if you are going to pick up your child at the end of the day.
