How do I report my child's absence?
If you child needs to be absent, the office must be notified immediately.
Please call 847-984-8801.
I need to pick up my child after school - who do I call?
If your child's transportation needs to change (i.e. parent pick up), I must
receive a written note from you. If I do not have a note, I am required to
put your child on the school bus. Parents can pick up their children from
the school library at 3:20 P.M.
How do I pay for Hot Lunch?
You can send cash or a check (payable to Woodland School Dist. 50) with
your child so long as it is in a sealed envelope clearly marked with my name
and your child's name. Please include what the money is for (i.e. lunch,
field trip, book order, etc.) You can also pay for Hot Lunch on the district
website with a credit or debit card (www.dist50.net).
What is your behavior plan?
I use a Golden Paw Program. My classroom expectations mirror the "High
Five". When children respect the classroom rules, they receive a "Golden
Paw". When rules are broken, students receive several warnings which follow
a "Stop Light" system:
Golden Paw = Excellent behavior. Followed directions and stayed on task.
Green = Good behavior. After one warning, got back on task.
Yellow = Demonstrated negative behavior. Did not listen or follow rules.
Needed several reminders.
Red = Unacceptable behavior. No Recess or Fun Friday. Need to contact
parents.
Five Golden Paws = Treasure Box Award
What are your classroom rules?
There are 5 basic rules (expectations) which are not only for my classroom,
but for the entire school district. We refer to these as the "High Five".
They are:
1. Eyes Watching
2. Ears Listening
3. Brain Thinking
4. Hands and Feet Still
5. Heart Caring
When are reading logs due?
Reading Logs are due every Monday. All students must read a minimum of 100
minutes per week. This is part of their required homework and it will be
recorded on the report card.
I think my child might need speech therapy - who do I call?
If you would like your child screened for speech therapy or any other
service, please contact me and I will complete a request form. This process
will take a couple of weeks.
I would like my child's hearing and/or vision tested - who do I call?
If you would like your child's hearing or vision screened, please contact me
and I will schedule a preliminary test with our school nurse.
How do I choose the right book for my child to read at home?
"Just-right books" make reading more fun and less frustrating. Have your
child try the "five-finger test" to select a book.
1. Choose a book he/she would like to read.
2. Look at a page in the middle.
3. Put one finger down for every word he/she can't read or doesn't
understand. If you have five fingers down, the book may be too hard.
4. If you have fewer than five fingers down, the book is "just right"! Read
it.
Your child may want to read a book that is "too hard" based on this test.
That's okay. Just make it a book that you read aloud to him/her, or that you
read together (perhaps alternating pages or chapters; or he/she reads, but
you sit alongside to answer questions or help him/her with challenging
words).
First your child should practice decoding, then he/she should work on
fluency and comprehension.
