How do I pick up my child from school?

Please call the office and tell them. The ladies in the office will in turn
buzz into my room and tell me. OR you may send a note and remember to tell
your child to give me the note!

Can I have lunch with my child?

Yes, you may! The district requires that you call in advance of 24 hours or
send a note a couple of days ahead and let the office know. The will let
the recess ladies and lunch ladies know... security reasons again! They are
very strict on this issue!

Why does my child need to keep a pair of gym shoes at school?

Your child needs to keep a pair of gym shoes at school for a couple of
reasons. The first is in case the children come to school without their
shoes in the winter wearing their boots, they then have a pair of shoes to
wear in the school. Believe me, this happens all the time! A second reason
is that when the students come in after outdoor recess with mud on their
shoes, they then change into their gym shoes to wear in the school for the
day and not track mud on the classroom carpet or the rest of the school.
And the third reason to keep gym shoes at school is because the gym teachers
also like the students to wear clean shoes on their gym floors and not the
students'street shoes.

Do we have to read every night?

The district requires each student in first grade to read a mininum of 20
min each night and enter it into their reading log each night they read.
Reading every night only increases your child's success rate later in life!

What do the markings in the Friday orange folders mean?

We mark each child's behavior every week with the following markings:
C=consistently-meaning that your child is following this behavior just about
100% of the time, S=sometimes-meaning that your child deviates from this
behavior some of the times, and N=needs improvement-means that your child is
NOT following the desired behavior and better get his/her act together! I
do let parents know that the S marking is a + or - sign meaning that they
are leaning towards a C or going down to an N. This is an optional
discipline/measuring tool this year and is should be viewed as a positive
thing. Usually, parents reward their children for each C accumulated each
week, or each S, etc., HOWEVER, the N's are NOT good. They are what we want
to extinguish and the required behaviour reinforced. Some rewards have
typically been: popcorn and a home/rental movie, going out for ice cream,
getting a Hot Wheels toy or a Polly Pocket toy, etc. Something minimal for
each accumulation of C's, etc. You can always let me know what your child's
goal is, so I can reinforce it at school, as well!!

Why is it important for my child to have a snack?

We have the first time slot for lunch this year. We will have a short snack
in the afternoon that will not interrupt academic learning time. The
students are not permitted to share snacks due to food allergies.

No donuts, candy, cookies, or junk food!!!! That is not brain food. The
school administration does not sanction such food for students in school.

Suggested foods for afternoon snack would be: muffins, pretzels, crackers,
cheese sticks, yogurt, ALREADY CUT UP fruit or veggies in a baggie or
plastic container,(provide your own spoon if needed) etc.

What about recess? How is it determined: inside or outside?

The students will go outside every day for outside recess UNLESS:
*they have a note from their doctor stating specific dates for illness and
staying indoors
*OR if the wind chill factor is below 0 degrees.
This is determined by the district administration on a day to day basis and
hourly basis on some days. If you have any questions, please call our
school office.
