News for Parents

DID YOU KNOW, that your Warren-Newport, Grayslake and Waukegan library cards
are good at ALL 44 NORTH SUBURBAN LIBRARIES??? YES!!! It only takes a few
minutes to become registered at another library. Bring your local library card and driver's license
for identification purposes.

CHECK IT OUT !!!

Check out your library's audiobook collection. While nothing can replace the
value of Mom and Dad sharing books with their children, audiobooks are a great way to keep your
child engaged with books while building their vocabulary, fluency and literacy.
Audiobooks are available on CD and as Playaways,( an MP3 player loaded with one or more books.) You
provide the headphones - that's it! Warren-Newport Library has both books with CD and PLAYAWAYS.
Grayslake Library does not have Playaways.

SECOND GRADERS TRAVEL THE WORLD

Second grade students have been invited to "travel the world" through the Magic Tree House Books.   Mary Pope Osborne is the acclaimed author of 43 titles in this series that takes children from ancient times to the present as they travel to all seven continents in the books.  Each child has been given a passport booklet in which they put stamps they've collected from their travels.  The stamps are issued at the Magic Tree House web site where students must correctly answer three questions about the books they've read.  If students collect at least 10 stamps their picture is taken holding their favorite MTH book, and it is put on display in the library on a special bulletin board with a bronze star.  Students who collect at least 20 stamps follow the same procedure but receive a silver star, and students who collect at least 40 stamps receive a gold star.
About 40% of all second graders are taking part in this project.  You can help your son/daughter collect their stamps at home at the following web site:  < www.magictreehouse.com>

TV TURN-OFF ARTICLE

An article about the TV Turn-Off Project is featured in the May 6th issue of The Tribune Newspaper - The TRIB LOCAL Section. p.7.
No picture was included since it would have involved getting written permission from the parents of 410 children which we did not have the time to do.
Your children will bring home a picture shortly; however, it isn't as clear as we hoped it would be.

MAGIC TREE HOUSE RECOGNITION

This morning, June 4th, thirty-one second grade students were awarded a ribbon by our principal, Mr. David Brown, for their participation in the Magic Tree House Project.  We are very proud of those children who took on the challenge to read and answer questions about either 10, 20 or 40 books from the series.  WELL DONE, KIDS!!!
