8th Grade General Music

Eighth grade general music is a seven-week music appreciation course that
looks at how music developed through time. Throughout history, people have
expressed their understanding of their world through the arts.

Eighth grade students:
      • Examine the development of America's music - Jazz - 1800s
         through 1940s
      • Students gain insight into the ways in which music reflects the
values, beliefs and interest of the society in which it was created
      • Trace its development from the days of slavery through the late 1940s
         - early 1950s through various activities and projects
	            • Blues
	            • New Orleans Style
	            • Swing - Big Band Era

      • Students will also be taking a journey through the development of
Rock ‘n Roll starting in the late ‘40s and early ‘50s.
	            • How Rock Began
	            • Elvis
	            • The Day the Music Died
	            • Motown

      • Students will also be participating in a program called "Music Rules'
by the Recording Industry Association of America. This Educational
program is designed to encourage children to use computer technology
responsibly and help lay the foundation for respecting all forms of
intellectual property. We will learn about rules against
         "songlifting" and internet piracy.
