The set is the scenery or background for a play and is usually the first thing people see at the start of a play. Before a set designer builds a set, they have to come up with ideas on what they want the set to look like. After researching the play and the time period the play is set in, the set designer makes sketches of it to see how it will look. After the director and designer have agreed on the set sketch, the set designer makes a model of the entire set.
You are a set designer and it is your job to create the physical world of the musical Mary Poppins. You are going to show the audience WHERE the story takes place. You are to create a set “model” for one of the following scenes in Mary Poppins:
- No. 17 Cherry Tree Lane - Outside
- No. 17 Cherry Tree Lane - Children’s Room
- No. 17 Cherry Tree Lane - Mary Poppin’s Room
- No. 17 Cherry Tree Lane - Study
- The Park
- The Bank
- The Rooftop
After you have created your model you need to create a label for it that contains the name of the scene and the name of the set designer (that’s you).
