November Classroom News
Mrs. Rotterman, Room 109
It now looks and feels like fall outside! Thank you for helping your child find leaves. I was impressed
with the variety of leaves they each found for the collections. We had a wonderful time at Heller
Nature Center exploring and learning about habitats. In science, we will now be studying animals
and their different characteristics. In social studies, we continue to learn about communities, map
skills, and past compared to present.
Mrs. Jackie Yin, from Kraft foods, is our Junior Achievement representative. In the Junior Achievement
program, we are focusing on our families, wants and needs, volunteering, and community life.
In Language Arts, we continue to segment sounds and learn short vowel sounds. We are also
reviewing all of the consonant sounds and their positions in words. We are reading stories that
highlight reading skills such as plot, analyzing characters, making predictions, and using context
clues. Many of our stories have included the short a, i, o, and u sounds as well as th, sh, and ck. We
will also begin mastering blends such as sl, sm, sn, fl, and fr. I hope your child is practicing the
second set of sight words that went home. We go over them regularly in class as well. I am very
excited about the reading progress the students have already made this year!
In religion, we just performed a saint skit for the kindergarteners and our 8th grade buddies. We will
discuss the sacrament of Baptism, as well as learn about how God made us to be good and holy and
how we give thanks to God. Ryan, Grace, and Molly will be taking up the gifts at the next All School
Mass on November 4th.
In math, we continue to work on addition and subtraction facts and strategies. You could work on
these facts at home with your child for extra practice and increased speed. We have practiced using
touchpoints on numbers as well as the number line for guidance. We are also learning about related
facts and fact families. We will begin working with plane and solid shapes towards the end of the
month.
I would like to congratulate this class for their efforts with Stride with Pride. They ran many laps and
raised significant money for the school. Our class even won the Robbie Gould sneaker!
I would like to thank Sally Bosacoma for providing the crafts for our Halloween party. The kids loved
them! Also, thank you to the Olsons for getting our class a new pencil and crayon sharpener. I
appreciate your help and all that parents do! I look forward to meeting with all of you at conferences
on Thursday, November 12th.
Thanks!
