Writing Class Writing class is a chance to experience variety. Variety in the type of writing pieces submitted, as well as variety in the modality of presenting and publishing the writing pieces. We focus on the quality of our submissions and ask students to write different types of pieces, including traditional journal writing, persuasive writing, letter writing, narrative writing, and descriptive story-telling. Students learn the editing process, which can be a difficult process. However, by the end of the school year, they are efficient at locating grammar, spelling, punctuation, and content errors. Each year in middle school, the expectations of these students is heightened in order to create competent "ready for high school" writers.

Social Studies Studying social studies, geography, or current events is truly an experience in the middle school. The FRA slogan of "learning beyond textbooks" is taken seriously in this class. Rarely is a textbook utilized. In fact, the majority of the learning that takes place is from directed research, done by the students on their laptops with teacher guidance, non-fiction trade books, and various types of media. A topic of study is delved into from all sides, past and current, domestic and international, fact and fiction, etc. Students often create projects culminating the information learned. This may be in the form of a computer generated presentation, clay mold, historical/current newspaper, poetry, or anything else his/her imagination may help create. The goal is to have global, well-informed students that understand where we have come from, what has been learned, and where this country is headed. |
