Second grade focuses on acts of kindness as a way of building their character
muscles.
Caring, cooperation, and citizenship are just a few areas of focus.
Within each specialty area,
students review how they can strengthen their character through specific types
of acts of kindness.
Most importantly, the acts of kindness they choose should positively change
the feelings of those around our students.
One project that we have taken on is selling cupcakes for cancer charities.
In October, we participate
in Cupcakes for a Cause that benefits the charity CancerCar e for Kids.
In January, we participate
in Hat Day.
Students are encouraged to wear hats in order to show support for those people
who have lost their hair due to cancer.
Money from this event is sent to the Foundation for Children with Cancer.
The cupcakes that are sold
for each event are made or bought by the second grade families and sold for
one dollar during lunch.
The money raised for each charity is used to offset bills families incur when
their children become afflicted with cancer.
Our students took part in baking, decorating, sharing information about the
charities, and selling the cupcakes at lunch.
After the sale, they wrote letters to the charities, sent photographs, and
made notes of encouragement to lift the spirits of patients.
In class, each student wrote
about their feelings and thoughts in their writing journals.
The impact that these fundraising events have had on our students is
remarkable.
Our children have opened their hearts and minds to positively changing the
lives of children afflicted with cancer.
